Try setting the gfx card vram to 0 (auto detect). If all else fails you can always try using pSX 1.10. This emulator has proven itself by not using any confusing plugins and is capable of running all Final Fantasy game (at least the US versions anyway) 100% perfectly with virtually no need to change any of the default settings.

I dunno what sound plugin are you using, but you could give Eternal SPU 1.41 a try:

    For sound I used:

    Eternal SPU Plugin 1.41
    DirectSound (Buffer size 32)
    SPUasync (Smooth)
    Rec option: REG write
    reverb: neill's

    (everything else is off)

Are you running the game from a disc or from an image? Some drives have problems reading PlayStation discs so you might be able to run the game better if you make an image of it and try to run it from that.
