Glad I could help. The graphics aren't up to today's standards by any means, but they're far, far from being bad enough to be problematic. And in every other respect, it's a wonderful game. I'm sure you'll have fun.

Oh? It ran fine on my computer... But then mine is hardly modern. I'm not even running XP, so...

I here it's hard to work on XP/NT systems and Dual Cores so it may be a pain for someone running Vista x64 on an Athlon X2.........

    edit:
still open to more suggestions tho

    edit2x:
yup, I can't get the installer to run on my nt system

    edit3x:
and yes, that's with the compatabilty set to win98/ME

    edit4x:
    -Ran: Y:\setup.exe -lgntforce
to get the setup to run
-set the sshock2.exe compatabiltiy to Windows 2000
-and once in the game set the affinity to CPU 0 or CPU 1
and it runs fine. perfect in fact constant 75 FPS at max settings (75 due to Vsync. Refresh rate is only 75, max for my monitor)

edit 5x: (wow 5 edits and counting)
I'm gonna try to set the AA and AF to the Max as well....

I'm thinking about buying Red Steel for the Wii (seeing as how it is only $20 now), and I was wondering if anybody here has played it, and what they have to say about the game. Is it any good? Or would I be better getting a different game like it?

Ok... any ideas then? I'm willing to try almost any genre, but am mainly looking for a good action or rpg type... and don't suggest Zelda, I own it on Gamecube.

    Knytt
    La Mulana
    Alex Adventure
    R

    etc...

Last Scenario is a pretty good game, with classic turn-based JRPG mechanics.
La-Mulana has been mentioned quite often I'm sure, but it's still one of the best metroidvania type games.
Ark22 is a zelda-like, as far as I know, but haven't played much of it myself yet.

As for non-free games, the Tales of Destiny PS2 remake is a pretty great mix of beat 'em up (some features could be likened to Guardian Heroes) and RPG, using an altered version of the LMBS. It's Japanese, but there's a fairly complete menu translation. [/shameless plug] You might wish to wait for the director's cut version, though.

Also, some Castlevania games, Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night, in particular. Yeah, obvious choices, but whatever.

Thanks for the suggestions (finally got around to checking this thread again today). I've downloaded Last Scenario and it is pretty good so far.

I'll second the GBA Castlevania games. They're all excellent, though I never really got into Circle of the Moon. I love Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow, however.

Another semi-obscure game: Phantom Dust, for the Xbox. Think a card game, but instead of cards, you collect mighty psychic powers. And the battle system is real-time. It's quite enjoyable.

I'm looking for more Cave Story style games, and I've seen the ones above mentioned. Thanks!

Not exactly like Cave Story, but Nifflas' new game called Knytt Stories is worth a try. It's kind of like a mixture of the original Knytt and Within a Deep Forest.
