Um...Breath of Fire 4 had cool characters. There was a dog in a robe, and an eccentric guy in a robot suit. So did Chrono Cross. For ages my party was mushroom-man hybrid, and a tiny alien (and Lynx, but that's a given.)
Also, special mention...the TRIARII, the elite Roman spearmen of the Legion, pre-Marius reforms. When you click on them, they go "TRIARII" and each man bangs their spear on the ground...
God I love Rome: Total War.
