Default Limiting internet download speed on Network

    Hi everybody

Well just been trying to google for this question but as it is there isn't much use in looking through pages that contain help for isps and such.
What I'm trying to do is to limit download speeds on my home network. As it is you have one person hogging it all when they start downloading using bittorrent progs and such. So is there a way I can set a download limit on each network port so each connected pc only has a certain amount of kbps/mbps they can use?
I'm connected thru router and my internet is ADSL.
All pcs connected run on XP.

when your on a network, if your not using a router, the hub will split your bandwidth in 2 or however many computers you have on the network. it will shard 50% with the other computer. if you have 3 computers, 33.3% bandwidth per computer, 25% for 4 and so on and so on. if one computer uses more then the other, the other computers will try to compensate and give the bigger user more bandwidth, i.e. if one computer is running a mmorpg. the best thing you can do is buy a router and get rid of the hub. routers give 100% bandwidth to all computers on a network. like in schools and such, all the computers have 100% of their own bandwidth to use.

I got the WebExcel PT-3812. It runs the connexant software in the setup.

SnakeSolid: I do realize that but also know that in networks you are able to set up rules to prevent abuse of that limit as well right?

Well, according to this site your router dosn't have that capability.
Maybe a firmware upgrade would add that functionality?

What you're looking for is a router with a 'Managed Switch' feature, but unfortunately the cost of such things run into the thousands. I've got a Dlink G504T and it doesn't officially support per port management, but this mob from Russia has written a third party firmware hack that enables it (Long live embedded Linux). So..yeah, checking out 3rd party hacks would be your best bet. They'll probably void your warrenty though, is the only thing :\

    Eh.. i beg to differ...

a SWITCH gives you 100% bandwidth on all physical ports..

a hub.. will share the total bandwidth over all the physical ports

    4 pcs.. connected to a 10mbps hub.. will get split lets say.. 1.5 / 1.5 / 2 / 5
4 pcs.. getting connected on a 10mbps switch.. will get split 2.5/2.5/2.5/2.5

your best bet.. might be to set up a policy allowing internet access at certain times of day.. or on certain days.. (maybe when your not home browsin the net?? ) thats usually allowed.. even on the cheapest of modems/routers

regardless.. your gonna need a router..(unless you use ics.. but ics/windows firewall sucks a** as it is anyway)
    just a thought..
