    Default Hard Drive Question

Would a internal hdd + external enclosure be just as good as an external hdd?

Should be. Providing it has USB (2.0 preferably)

If you use USB 2.0 you get 480mbps (mega bits) which translates into 60 Megabytes a sec.

so if you have a ATA-133 (133 megabytes a sec.) in a harddrive enclosure u'll only be using half of the drives max. speed.
    i bit of a waste, i think.
    but if u used ATA-66 OR ATA-100
it'd be more equally matched to USB 2.0

also i dunno abount booting OS's of that HD, i maybe wrong though (usb booting)
    correct me if i'm wrong

P.S. Firewire is 400mbps (megabits) but has continuiously high speeds

firewire is faster, but not everything supports it.

usually an internal w/ case is cheaper. check newegg

External Hard-drives are useful if you are bringing files to other people, but if you just want a hard-drive for yourself buy an internal they are cheaper and son't require a power supply.

    Try exactly the same.

Also, I don't think anyone actually answered your question realy.

But yes, Assuming you get a USB 2.0 enclosure, or a firewire one, it should be just as good.

It is just as good. The whole "external HDD" thing is a joke. If you crack the case open, it's just the usual internal 3.5" HDD.

Too bad I was a noob back in the days, and bought one of these.

Yeah, that's the way to go. It's much cheaper than buying it all in one shot.

That's why I brought it up. It's a whole lot cheaper to buy them separately.

    A few more questions:
Is there a difference between Maxtor, WD, and Seagate hdds?

I'm kinda confused on the ATA133 vs ATA100. How much of a difference in speed is there (when enclosed in an enclosure)?

    Thanks!

I've always had Maxtors and they've treated me well. Then again, a hundred other people will say the same for the other brands. You're probably okay either way.

like i said before USB 2.0 is 480 megabits
    Firewire is 400 megabits

USB 2.0 will give a max of 60 megabytes
which seems to go nicely with ATA-66 which is 66 megabytes a sec
see what i meat by ATA -100 almost being wasted in an enclosure.

    just for intrests sake
why do you need to use an enclosure?

Oh ok I see. So the only way I'd need a ATA100/133 is if I would plan on putting it inside the computer someday.

Well I was going to split it between me and my gf since we seem to leech like crazy. I have a desktop 80gb WD and she has a 100gb notebook hdd and they're getting full.
