It should give you an error number in the top left hand corner, eg error 16
Edit: If it is chipped you can download slayers auto installer from the usual places and set everything back up with it. If it is softmodded it can be fixed as i had the same problem, but it involves opening the xbox and hot swapping to a pc using a linux program called xbox hdd manager to set everything back up.

hmmm. ok. so, he got the xbox today, and only tried a burned music cd on it? and no game? if so, did the game work? something sounds very wierd here.

7 - kernel - HDD timeout. Your xbox is seeing the hdd but refusing to boot, normally this error code can mean a dodgy hdd.
Have you had the xbox open? Could be a loose connection between your ide ribbon and hdd or a bent pin, but i think that would be an error 8.
