By the way, are live bootlegs considered illegal? Only if the actual live performance becomes official for sale? I know there is one Napalm Death bootleg that was "seized" from a fan in Japan and was published by Earache records. I'm sure the fans who recorded at least got a lollipop for their help.

I have no clue on the live bootlegs issue because of this, I used to be registered on a bittorrent site that only had live bootlegs and only allowed live bootlegs. After a couple of months the site was shut down due to legal matters but they recently put it back up but I can't remember the link. Anyways, there was a message there stating that none of the material on the site is copyrighted and it's just live bootlegs that people trade. For each torrent on there the uploader always left a comment like "If you try to sell this you're a fag. For trading purposes only."

Logically, I think they are legal because there is no copyright on the show unless it was taped and released by the artist. I heard about that Napalm Death story but I don't remember much about it. There was also a Possessed live album released which was also a bootleg from the 80's...

Why did the band request to have the lyrics taken off of a site? I'm sure most musicians wouldn't give a fuck if people "stole" their lyrics or tabs, much much more than artists who don't care for folks downloading their music. For shizzle, they might as well outlaw listening to music with the intent of learning how to play a part of or the entirety of a song.

Gorgoroth does the same thing as well. It's beyond me why they do that. It's not like they have the lyrics on their website, either.

The most asinine thing about this whole situation is that tablature and lyrics are actually permitted under fair use laws. It's someone's INTERPRETATION of a song and was created for educational purposes. The MPA's holier-than-thou attitude is total bullshit. I've only ever bought a couple of tablature books and as well as costing �20 each they were both full of mistakes! Plus, like Soeru and Tancred pointed out, what about bands that have no published tabs? There are even world famous bands such as Pantera that you can't buy a complete collection of tablature for. All this is doing is preventing people from progressing at their instrument and harming the future of music as a result. Hell, the MPA will lose even more money five years down the line when they have nobody to tab! I don't know about the rest of you but I doubt I'd have gotten very far with guitar in the beginning were it not for websites such as MXtabs.

This ruling has so many ramifications it's not even funny. What about people who write down the lyrics whilst they're listening to a song, or even those who (God forbid) SING them in the car? Awesome, I'm filesharing on my way to college! What's that, little Johnny? You made a Metallica MIDI and posted it online!? Better not drop the soap!

Technically yes, but the vast majority of bands don't seem to mind as long as nobody's making money from the recordings. Pearl Jam for example encourage fans to trade their own personal concert recordings amongst one another.

It is illegal to record, and to commerically sell them, but to trade them and to give away is a bit of hazy area. Like copied games - in the UK it's illegal to sell them, but not illegal to buy them It is certainly not considered piracy though, as the consumers aren't getting copies of something "official".

This tab ruling is idiotic and retarded. Seriously, how much money is made off tab books? Online tabs have virtually become indispensable to amateur instrument players, it is a bit late now to start trying to shut down sites.
