and to whoever it was that mentioned using more tahn one AV, that's just dumb. i talked to a guy at best buy that told me (after taking a look at my laptop) the running avg and nav is a bad idea b/c sometimes NAV will see a virus, and AVG will try to do something with the virus, and they will cancel eachother out, the virus will stay, and sometimes the system will crash.

which is why I completely uninstalled Norton and kept AVG.
Yes it is stupid, don't use more than one AV at a time. What I meant is to do scans with Kaspersky each week, not to let the live protection run.

Okay a few things about that

    1. Ads can in fact contain viruses/adware/spyware. Look up "clear pixeling" if you think I'm BSing you. They are bad for computers and should be blocked. Even if it is just to decrease annoyance with all the "Click here"'s flashing around.

    2. You trust Best Buy's support team? yeah bunch of n00bs if I ever seen n00bs in my life.

3, AVG is definantly the way to go so you at least know a good AV when you see it. Good job

    4. I have 3 AV progs, my CPU is fast, never crashes, and not once have I gotten a virus. So I don't know what you're talking about. I have gotten message that a virus was blocked, but the virus was really blocked and never showed in any of my scans.

Oh and good job with this hardc0re. If this security setup is good enough for you, it's more than good enough for me. Good work with the add on comments as well everyone.

ignore those, they suck. my suite of proggies when running winblows is firefox, avg, NVIDIA hardware firewall, and privoxy. with that, you dont need anything else.

hell, my security alert keeps going off. too bad im never turning on automatic updates (at least until sp3, but then ill prolly just dl the redist)

polobunny, if you send me the links to those sites (the ones I didn't post) I will update to include them. My setup is more simple (most noobs roll their eyes when dealing with 2 programs..imagine 15!?) but yours covers security down to about 99.9% of stopping everything. Very good work! +REP for you.

Have you ever considered college as a Certified systems security professional? In the U.S. you would be guaranteed a job, especially if some hacking skills go with that. And the IP/hardware fundamentals.

    My solution would consist of:

    AVG Antivirus
    Sygate Personal Firewall
    Ad-Aware SE
    Spybot Search and Destroy
    Ewido Security Suite
    HijackThis!
    M$ Antispyware
    Spyware Doctor
Kaspersky Antivirus (for some AVG can't destroy)
    Mozilla Firefox + Extensions
    -Adblock
    -Nuke Anything
    PeerGuardian 2
    Netlimiter
    EasyCleaner

Scan with a different antivirus/anti-spyware every night and you're clean. ^___^
Visit the sites hardc0regamer posted, they are badass. I like the last one alot, it includes great tools.

hardc0regamer: I like this thread. I must apologize for my putting down of your last thread on security, as I truely felt it had no relevance to real life, common, average joe PC security, but this one is very good.

If you wanna turn off that annoying "Your comp may be at risk cuz you don't have window's faggoth firewall up and automatic downgrades on" message, go to control panel> administrative tools> services and scroll down to "security center." Double click it and set the status to "stop" and then set the startup type to manual (unless you know what you are doing, i wouldn't disable any service).
