Right. If you had to run for your life due to *insert life-endangering-situation-which-would-force-you-to-run-for-your-life here* and you had just enough time to take what you would need, what would it be? Toothpaste? Underwear? Money? Condoms? Food? Water? Knives? Guns? Nothing?

    Discuss or Die.

dingy, i'm getting the feeling you're in somewhat of a bad mood. i'm prolly wrong. on topic: nothing. i wouldn't take anything, just make sure my nephew was ahead of me wherever it was we were running for our lives too.

Ah. See. I was going to make another thread about that. But I shouldn't waste server space (if there's a thing like that). On 8th October, when the earthquake came, my house shook like a water bed with an orgy happening on it. No damage. But I've never experienced an earthquake on the 6th floor of a 20 floored building.
My 80 year old granny had sprained her foot the previous day, so her running was out of the question. The elevator wasn't working. I would take my dogs and run, but would I leave my granny? I told her that we must try getting down and she told me to go without her, now, not to sound Titaniccy, but it got me really upset and thinking about a situation much worse and who I would save?
I'm also more paranoid than the average Dingy about silly things, so have a 'handy bag' ready. Have food, water, money (though I don't know how that'll help) and photos of MasJ, my mum and sister and my doggies. O and underwear. Veery important.
So was just thinking if anyone else was as crazy as me and would actually contemplate a safe guard.

Brady, any particular reason why you would take nothing?

sorry to hear that dingy. hope no actual damage was done to your place (noticable damage). there are lots of things i'd actually take but if this were a real situation, all that would be on my mind is getting my nephew out. and my sister. i didn't care if i were left behind as long as they were out. my mom is blind so i'd be behind helping her but there's no reason for my sis and nephew to stay behind especially since i prolly couldn't live with myself if anything ever happened to'em. meh.

Hmm... I'd have to say I'd bring a cd player and the Converge cd Jane Doe. Oh, and can't forget my family Lemme see, other than that, for material posessions, I'd probably bring... I'm not sure. Material posessions means nothing compared to your family.

I'd just take the people around me out of the situation. And the dog too.

Given where I am right now, I don't have to worry about family getting out of whatever situation the building's in that puts me in danger, so that simplifies the equation a bit. I'd grab the PC case (or just the two hard drives inside, if I have time to pull the screws) to preserve the most crucial bits of my computer (peripherals, even that shiny new monitor, can be replaced a lot faster than over 100 GB of data spanning years...I learned that when my last HD crashed, and got really lucky with some of my old Photoshop work >_<), backpack to preserve my schoolwork for the quarter (and, oddly enough, my GBA SP which always is inside it) and whatever books I can get in there (of course, special preference given to manga due to thinness - fit more in - and history books - knowledge...my favourite fiction novels may be here too, but I can replace them faster than either of those two), and quickly zipping up my CD case (easy carrying, and a lot of data stored in there...data = anime or games exclusively in this case, unlike my computer). Absolutely critical would be my notebooks, though, containing my writing and story thoughts going back to junior high school. That would probably be everything I could carry out, and the worst thing for time would be either pulling every cord out of the back of the computer or deciding which books come with me...on the other hand, if it's something like a fire, I'd be just as likely to throw what books I can't carry out the window (hopefully missing anyone five stories below at ground level...even paperbacks *hurt* when they fall from that far) and pick it up once I come out; even if it's in slightly less-than-mint condition, at least it's still more readable than being crisped.

Extra food or clothes wouldn't be necessary unless whatever problem it is affecting a 30+ mile radius around the city (in which case, the entire Greater Metro Area is up in smoke anyways, and whatever I'm doing at Ground Zero won't matter much)...there's something to be said for the decentralization that comes from not actually living at home, but attending a university reasonably nearby. Money is also a default state for me, since I always carry my wallet out of habit (I need my ID card to unlock the elevators or stairs to get to my room), though it's unlikely I'd need it immediately nearly as much as the identification information itself.
