My bad. FLAC is indeed lossless compression. So, anyway.

In terms of quality, 24bit FLAC Vinyl rips are the only way to go.

    About IrfanView:

For jpeg, use 80 - 85 if you don't want any noticeable loss in quality.

Use 70 - 75 if you don't mind a slight, barely noticeable loss in quality, and what the file size reduced more.

You'll know what I mean by 80 when you try to save your jpeg with "Show options dialog" enabled.

    Kinda like wav>flac>MP3.
    BMP>PNG 24bit
As for PNG256 and JPEG, it depends. PNG will give a sharper image no matter what, but you might lose color information. So at that point it depends on the image and whether you prefer to lose sharpness or color information

PNG is a lossless compression. As long as you have it setup to use the same number of colors as your source image then you'll be fine. It's my preferred format for anything I create.

Had to resize it for widescreen, but I'm rather keen on my current laptop background.

Yup. Problem is, images with lot of colors can weight a freaking lot. Not always the perfect format when posting a screenshot of your desktop for others to see.
