    Default CD/DVD Drive Problem

For some reason, on my old computer the CD/DVD drive has stopped working. It won't recognize disks anymore. If I put in a CD, it'll act like nothing is even in the drive. Is there any way to fix this problem without having to spend any (or much) money?

might have gone bad. having the same issue with my brother's dvd rom. won't recognize any discs what so ever. i cleaned the lens, nada. yet the bios still detects the drive. i tried other ways that i thought of myself that might work as well as what one of my professors told me (physically remove/reinstall) and that didn't work either. so my edumacated guess is its no good anymore. how long have u had the drive for? when did it start not functioning?

I had the same problem once with my CD-RW drive.
Something happened to it, and no matter what I tried, I couldn't get Win98 to recognize that drive again.

I finally fixed it by removing the drivers which I'd installed for the CD-RW drive (which came with a CD that had the drivers on them) shutting down my comp, opening the case, disconnecting all the cables from both my CD-R and CD-RW drives, restarting my comp, let it finish booting, then shut it down again, open the case again, reconnect the cables to both drives, restart my comp, and finally reinstall the drivers.

Win98 with it's iffy, buggy, sometimes-it-works-and-sometimes-it-doesn't PlugN'Play, and always having to restart anytime you add or remove something, ugh, it can be so annoying sometimes.
