For me it's a tie between Xenogears, Tales of Destiny, Rhapsody and Final Fantasy Tactics.

Grandia is very good but I couldn't put it on my favorite game list.

I'd have to go with DWVII, Chrono Cross or FFTactics. I can't really choose only one of these three since they vary greatly in design, but they represent the best of their sub-genres for me.

FF7 was pretty average plot-wise, too. And Chrono Trigger was much better than Chrono Cross, IMO.

Hm. I agree with this man. CC's storyline -and the whole game, to be honest- didn't really impress me.

While Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story push the definition of the term "RPG" in the traditional sense...hey if they count, those get my vote (in that order). FFT is still my fav game on the PSX, and the top overall turn-based strategy game imo.

I haven't played too many yet, but so far, it is Xenogears. I didn't care too much for FF7, it kind of bored me (and I'm sick of its ultra-fans).

Breath of Fire 4 was great, Xenogears was fantastic, the Legend of Dragoon battle system was cool .

    Anyone like Jade Cocoon?

Thank You!! Finally someone who appreciates the greatness of LoD's battle system.

My all time favorite Playstation RPG is Thousand Arms. The only thing I disliked about the game is the battle system, but its not that bad.

    Favorites in order
1 - BoF 3 (FF Tactics would be here, if you hadn't explicitly said no FF games)
2 - Star Ocean: The Second Story
    3 - Vagrant Story
    4 - Lunar 2
    5 - BoF 4
    Runner-Up - Xenogears

Oh well... U've listed almost all of them...

Hey, wait a sec... both Parasite Eve's were cool too (i liked PE1 better though...)

Let me add one more vote to Vagrant Story and two for Legend Of Dragoon. Guardian's Crusade was also pretty cute and fun.

The list is almost endless... (Thousand arms, Grandia, Wild Arms 1/2 -liked better WA2-, Dragon Quest, Dragon Warrior, Beyond the beyond -many people dint like it, but...-, Saga Frontier 1/2, Azure Dreams -bloody complicated, but good-, Vandal Hearts 1/2 -very FFT like-, Vanguard Bandits, etc, etc, etc)

And finally, the one -i think- that was left aside, Koudelka (or was it Kouldeka?), a great horror Rpg. Haven't beaten it yet, but it looks promising.

Anyone played Zill O'll? I read somewhere it was a Final Fantasy like game, but haven't found much info about it. I have found it in the ed2k network, but i'm not quite sure its worth dling it.

P.D.: About Chrono Cross... well, the graphics were good, but the story was too... well, it wasn't just as good as Chrono Trigger - it was like over-cluttered. And the fact that u could recruit more than 40 characters... well, u just couldn't find the time to get deeply into any of them. Maybe if it'd have been only 5-6 main characters, and the storyline not that much cluttered, it'd have been great.
