Out of the original series, if I had to choose a couple of games you shouldn't play, I would say MM4 and MM6. They are decent in their own right, and do offer a somewhat different style to the series, but MM4 didn't feel as refined as the others, and MM6 was far too easy. My personal favourite is MM3.

However, if you haven't played it yet, go get Megaman X (the first one for SNES) right fucking now. Hands down the best game in the entire series, in my opinion.

If you're gonna play a Battle Network game, play 6; it's the last in the series, but it's also the best. Not that it matters much anyway, since the first thing that happens in the game is that the main character moves to a whole new city, leaving all the established characters behind that's not his family.

Great game. I remember the first time I ever beat that one... one of the most memorable moments of my childhood.

Alice: Madness Returns. I'm a bit surprised by how much I liked it. I even went to the trouble of finding all the collectibles and ended up clocking like 30 hours into the game. The lack of bossfights is somewhat disappointing, and it does drag on at times, but I honestly wasn't that bothered by all that since I enjoyed the atmosphere so much.
