Well, there are three types of apostates, though.

Apostasy A Fide (Perfidi�): Leaving the Christian faith for another. This is not heresy, however, since Perfidi� is the wholesale rejection of Christianity where Heresy is teaching or professing doctrines not in accord with Christianity (Dualism, as noted by Cathari, Gnosticism, and Manach�ism most significantly, is a heresy...Lutheranism, Calvinism, and other related faiths are also heresies, though from their perspective, Catholicism is the heretical faith...it's all in how you look at it ).

Apostasy Ab Ordine: The abandonment of religious duties by a cleric or monk of the faith.

Apostasy A Religione (Monachatus): The abandonment of a monastery by a monk, done with no intent to return.

Apostasy A Fide is really the only one that would be relevant to a person who doesn't follow the Patriarchates or Pontiff, though.

I was pointing out what we, in my faith, call people who try to stop our work. Apostates.

Lucifer is a fallen angel, originally one of God's favoured, who refused to acknowledge humanity as his greatest creation, as I recall. His name also means the Light-Bringer, which has drawn interesting comparisons to Prometheus, among others. He's not a demon, but he led the rebellion and was defeated and cast out by the Archangel Michael (Another of God's favoured).

I think...looking at the Wikipedia entry, it's not actually ever mentioned in the Old Testament that there was a war in Heaven, but it is implied and guessed at from interpretation of different passages. Most of it seems to derive from translation works done by St. Jerome, who translated the Greek and Hebrew Bible into Latin originally.
