When you say that your computer fails to boot, give me some more info. When the computer is turned on is there any text at all displayed on the screen? If so your CPU isnt broken. Its something else. It could also be a graphics card problem but it's really a tough call because there are a few things that can cause the computer to not boot.
    1. Fryed processor.
    2. Fryed graphics card.
    3. Corrupted Windows installation.
    4. Fryed Mobo alltogether.
Also since you said the computer just shut off by itself it could be a corrupted windows installation. Just depends if it was writing to any critical files on the hard drive during the time.

I find it hard to believe that it's fried because the computer would have shut down before it could have friend and sent out some warning signals such as beeps, So It might be OS based.

Mine rebooted when I was trying to sign on to msn, I reset the CMOS and it booted just fine ever since.

Are you referring to the Box as the CPU? Or to the actual Central Proccessing Unit it'self?
Because the way you stated your question leads me to think you were talking about the box, tower, computer etc..

Are you using more than one OS??
If yes it's a posibility that the MBR was corrupted leading
the boot loader to fail on finding boot data for OS...
This should be easy to fix by repairing broken Boot record...if you
have a backup of course or reinstalling OS's...which is rather annoying.

If at startup some BIOS letters are shown that means
it's fine and so the video card and the only problem may
be with your HD's Boot Record.

I cannot tell it for sure, though.
