Default Sound Problems (Helping a poor fella friend)

Hey, sup guys.My friend said he has an error with his sound device. I tried to get him to make the error pop up, but he has no luck. He says it says the following, "Cannot play file. Cannot detect sound device." Something along the lines. I've tried helping him myself over the phone, but no luck. Any help? I guess it's urgent. Thanks!

    Install drivers for the device.

Yeah, he says everything is installed correctly. I even asked him to go to Device Manager, and everything seems to be enabled and running smoothly.

It is apprently not. Uninstall the device then re-install the proper drivers for it, and it should work and be detected under the multimedia devices section. This way he'll be able to play mp3 and everything needing direct sound.
I see that happen all the times with Creative Labs sound cards. Damn this company sucks at making a simple website with simple drivers that applies to all their cards.

Ok. I'm not sure which ones to uninstall it, so would it be the "Sounds, game controllers, etc" section? If not, could you list the Section it's in? Thanks a lot man.

Sorry for the non-english interface It says something like:

Would it be that last one, the Vinyl AC 97 one? That's the only one that seems to have an uninstall option. I want to make sure It can be installed again.

is that the name of the sound card? if so yes uninstall that one and reinstall. if you are using windows xp, boot into safe mode after uninstalling and use Driver Cleaner to make sure its gone (XP tries to recreate the file if it is missing, thus the driver is not completely gone)
