A nice way to be able to decode DivX, XviD, WMV, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 is to install <a href="http://ffdshow.sourceforge.net/">ffdshow</a> which also includes quality video postprocessing and can decode most audio formats too. In fact ffdshow alone should cover most peoples needs as far as decoding goes.

If you want to encode quality video on a mpeg4 based codec (much like divx) you can use the <a href="http://www.xvid.org/index.php">xvid</a> encoder, this is a very high quality and also free codec. You can only get source code from the official site, but you can search around and find precompiled windows binary installer versions.

I recommend RealAlternative
It lets you play .rm and .rmvb files in players besides realplayer.

Sorry to repeat others but the only two players I use are Video Lan Client (VLC). it doesnt need to be installed so it can be run from a memory stick. I also use Media player classic. Plus K-lite codec pack
