Thumbs down Super Mario 64 - no ghosts

Please let me off if this is a disgraceful noobie question

New to emulating N64 stuff. Using either Project64 or Nemu but neither shows the ghosts in the castle back garden when I load my rom (downloaded from emuparadise). Any ideas?

The ghosts don't appear till you get a certain number of stars Once the ghosts appear you can access the ghost house, which is like the fifth level.
*PSA* Wii Redump collector's can now unscrub ISO files. So scrubbed games can now be verified. You can find the program to do this here
