Media player classic is also open source . And I had no problem with it. And it works on windows, isn't Mplayer only for linux?

It's in View=>Options=>choose playback=>output and choose your video renderer(you know which one to choose don't you?) then reopen the file

ive used to have an MP3 player that played EVERYTHING. And to fix you problem, go to My computer, control panel, add/remove programs, uninstall windows media player and d/l a free player off the net.

I suggest you use Media Player Classic, as Kymil suggested, and use the VMR7 (Renderless) renderer. If you experience problems like squary box around subtitles (problem with transparency) or weird subtitle colors, try VMR9 (Renderless).

Thanks. I tried MPC and changed the renderer and it works fine! BTW is there anyway to merge the srt file with the avi file quickly?

I'm not sure but i think TMPGEnc can do that. I had to do it once for a small anime.
Not sure of the method though, been a while.

Ah, found a page, looks like what i did before:

OK...I've run into a little problem here...I was able to combine the avi and srt file with tmpegenc but the srt file I have uses the italics tag. tmpegenc won't recognize tags i guess so I can see the tags around all the subtitles...is there a quick way to remove all the tags in the srt file or can I get tmpegenc to recognize tags???

Do a find and replace that will only match the tags (from notepad or something) and make it replace them with a single blank space or something.

Nope. And since it is open source, you can compile it to virtually any system. I have Windows version of it and it has worked better than any other media player program I've tried. I use it GUI-less (there is a GUI available), but some people might find it difficult to use that way. But the advantage is that I can take full control of it, like set custom parameters and such. If you are not like the type that wants to tweak the settings like that, MPC is easier to use.

There's tons of switches for MPC, and tons of options in the gui, which makes it enough customizable for me.
I might give a try at Mplayer.
