    Default FreeBSD question...........

does FreeBSD have a GNU (sp? like window's desktop) ??

I installed it on my virtual machine, and took about 30 minutes to install, then when i rebooted it, it asked me for the username, which i inputted 'root' and my password. then..... how the heck do I get around this freakin prompt?

If there's any tutorials or help files that can familiarize me with FreeBSD, that would be great.

I'm looking to build a freeware computer (at the software end, that is), using maybe linux, and all the free programs out there like open office, games, Gimp, etc.

Any help on the software will be great also

    Thanks way in advance!!

You mean GUI. And of course. It uses the X server, which is exactly what GNU/Linux uses. Then on top of that you run a window manager.

    home.sandiego.edu/~reinholz/freebsd
    also www.freebsd.org/handbook

The first is one I wrote, which gets you going quicker, and the second gives you much more detail, but not as many subjects.

Almost all of the programs you run on linux run on FreeBSD. Tell me what needs you have and I can probably tell you good software to use.

do you have to install the X server seperately, or is it included with the install or on the second cd?

[edit] never mind, i found your bit on configuring the X thingy

    Thanks *Gives you a banana*

It depends on what installation options you chose.

There is like, developer, X developer, user, x user, and a few others. If you chose one with X in the name then you got it. You might be best off reinstalling following my guide.

Otherwise you can install it via ports. First go through my tutorial and setup ports.

    As root:
"cd /usr/local/ports/xorg" "make install clean" come back after awhile and then go back to following my guide.

hey, Xaenn, could you send me that whole bit that you did? It would be much easier due to the fact that my dial-up internet at home is sucking ass, and it would take 10 minutes to bring the pics up... (I'm at school right now)

either pm it to me or email it to me at: masters1.0(at)gmail(dot)com

just send it as a zip, rar, or 7z file..

    thanks for the help

No problem. As long as I can remember I'll send it to you when I get home.

Edit: Do you want me to send all the pics too or to leave them out?

I think it's in the range of ~3-4mb.

If I can help someone come to the light, I'm glad to do it.

Haha. I'm glad you have so much zeal. I just hope you like the system as much as I do when you get it going.

I do agree thet Macs suck, but I do like Mac OS X. It has a beautiful user interface, and you can compile and install alot of software designed for other UNIX-compatible or like systems. Once PearPC gets...'good', I want to try it out.

Yeah, my brother has a Mac and he swears by it. They have a strong base in FreeBSD, so they can't be all that bad.

Not 100% sure, but I think grub works with freebsd, might not though. Think I remember hearing lilo doesn't work with *bsd, but not sure about that either. You could always try using a livecd of something and install grub that way.
