EU considers Nazi symbols ban

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- The European Union's top justice official was considering Monday whether the 25-nation bloc should ban the use of Nazi symbols after Britain's Prince Harry wore a swastika armband to a costume party.

Franco Frattini, the EU's justice and home affairs commissioner, said he was open to discussing the issue at a Jan. 27 meeting of EU justice ministers.

"It may be worth looking into the possibility of a total ban, a Europe-wide ban," his spokesman Friso Roscam Abbing told reporters. "Commissioner Frattini shares the general feeling of opprobrium on the use of the swastika and other Nazi symbols."

The call came after several German conservatives, socialists and liberal democrats in the European Parliament urged a European ban following a scandal last week over photos of Harry, third in line to the British throne, wearing a Nazi outfit at a costume party.

German Socialist Helmut Kuhne called Harry a "royal idiot" for not knowing the consequences and World War II history linked to the Nazi swastika.

Germany already bans such symbols.

Roscam Abbing said Frattini would urge EU ministers to use the swastika incident to push for agreement on EU-wide rules to combat racism, fascism and anti-Semitism.

A proposal was introduced two years ago but discussions have failed to make headway.

Roscam Abbing said officials would take care not to violate freedom of expression in devising such a ban.

Frattini's decision to look into an EU-wide ban could further embarrass Queen Elizabeth II, who is to lead British commemorations of the Holocaust in London later this month.

A Deutsch friend of mine tells me that even games are censored from Nazi-related stuff. The flags and shit were removed from games like Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Call of Duty, and other WWII games. He also tells me that Germany has strict violence-regulation laws, games like C&C had missions in which you had to slaughter civilians removed from the German version, not to mention that land troops were replaced by robots or something. Green blood appears in games like Counter-Strike too. Oh yeah, and the band Cannibal Corpse are forbidden to play any songs from their first 3 albums in Germany due to the nature of the lyrics(which are still the same shit).

I beleive that banning the Nazi symbol would be the equivelent to banning the Rebel Flag here in the states. I don't know the extent of the display of the Nazi symbol in Europe, but I know that it is not uncommon to see the rebel flag a lot around here in the South. Most people have them out for heritage not racism.

People who go around wearing such a thing are ignorant fools, or just want attention, but I see no point in banning the thing(No of. to SS, but I doubt you wear one IRL). The EU might as well ban middle-fingers while they're at it.

Just more government paranoia along the lines of people wanting to ban religious statues and texts in court houses in the US. Does it really matter that the shit is posted up on the walls, or that there is a statue on the front lawn of Moses or something? No one is forcing you to read/look at it. I personally don't give a shit, anyway. If some judge decided to put a statue of Jesus, Moses, Muhammad and Buddha playing poker together on the front lawn of his court house I couldn't care less.
