Try some grunge brushes around the explosion or something. But rather than use the brush, use an eraser.
What program are you using?
what is a grunge brush?
I'm using PS8

They're just brushes with different shapes and textures.Originally Posted by Uncle Evil

That's for Photoshop though. Don't know aobut anything else.
hmmm im still not realy getting the effect im going for with that. maybe it would be possible for me to send you the PSD so you can try some stuff out on it and let me know what you come up with. i cant upload it here though cause its like 3.9 mb
I doubt I could to anything decent. Get someone like gfx. to try. I'm sure he would able to do something.
In my view, a real explosion (fiery and stuff) wouldn't look great in a space scene. I suggest using a lens flare. Sure, it doesn't look how an explosion should, but more importantly, it's cooler and loads easier.
Here's an example taken from a project I'm currently working on.
well its not so much an explosion as it is a spew of molten rock
Then you're only left with Deach's suggestion. Use brushes with textured tips.
Or you could go and find one of the many explosion tuts at Good Tutorials.

OK well this is the final product. thnx goes out to deach for the explosion itself but i changed its coloring and blending. anyway i also just added more details and changed the coloring of the planet in the lower left corner
Im open to anyother suggestions/comments anyone might have

That reminds me. Alyn has great selection of space art tutorials. Check out these two. They're exactly the effect you wanted to achieve.
