    Default A Sony-style fuck-up: defective PSP's...

    News - PSP defects reported

Posted by Samuel Altersitz at 03:10:58 PM EST on 12.13.2004.

Reports are coming in that the initial shipment of PSP units is seeing some defective units getting to the public.

    These defects include:

    # Dead pixels, as many as 3 per screen with the problem.
    # Broken UMD drives.
    # Analog nubs not working.

Sony has yet to make any official announcement about any of these issues, and about how users with any of these problems can recitfy them.

Be sure to check back for Sony's response to these issues.

    UPDATE: More problems ahoy!

    # Analog nubs not just not working, but actually falling off.
    # PSP is turned on, but does not start up.
    # Screen has air bubbles.
    # Screen has dust on the inside.

Also, as for the UMD drive problems, some have reported the drive not closing completely, and the UMD, when the PSP is twisted, actually flies out!

Most retailers are stressing the fact that these problems don't occur in the majority of PSPs, but take caution in importing until Sony gives an official announcement.

    UPDATE 2

Video of UMD popping out when unit is turned/twisted (Quicktime, 40KB).

    Source: Joystiq.com
Now that just plain sucks. Can't wait to hear Sony's response to this...

I just have to say that I've seen the actual source concerning those "problems". And well, some of them are fakes. For example the pic showing the loose nub was Photoshopped like hell. The pic was very small and the left edge of the PSP was all blurry after using the PS brush.

The "launching UMD" problem is very real though. I've seen all kinds of joke pictures about that.

Oh and here are the launching UMDs.

    http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cf6y-oot/auto.avi

EDIT: They aren't really launching out. It's just that the cover opens up if you twist the PSP. But why the heck would you do that, I ask? :eyeball:

EDIT2: Found the nub picture. Look at it. Isn't it pretty darn obvious that it has been altered?

    Good point....

However, if you get excited and put a little to much power in to you button pushing..., or drop it on accident.. it goes to show the disk could pop out and become damaged... as could the drive.... Not good for a portable system...

Look at nintendo and their systems... drop them 20 feet, leave them in the snow... not a problem...

I cant tell that it's been edited... can i see an original..

Oh of course. Hopefully it's just a small problem that's easily fixable. Oh and check the picture I posted.

...you can't? Look at the left edge. It's all blurry and stuff. It should not look like that.

...check the image with a hex editor and you will find the words Photoshop 3.0 in it. And the d-pad is way too close to the left edge. I'm pretty darn sure it has been altered.

But sure, it could be a bad pic.

EDIT: ARGH stay away from my REX pictures!

the bad pixle thing is true, only one or two, you can't even see it unless you try really hard. every thing else is crap, even if its true, there will be millions of customer who rather have a bad psp then no psp. beside, thats why its good for us non jap. they will find out major problem and fix it by the time for the US release. On the other hand, if a handheld(hint!) come out in the US first, we would have to deal with all the crap and the jap. gamer will get an improve version,
