    Default Virus? .exe?

Alot of people have been ticked at EP, because of apparent virii/trojan/adware problems... I of course try to keep playing them off... however...

This was posted as a comment on the main page...

I keep trying to tell them that it's a false alarm... but i dont even know if that's the case anymore...

Personaly i think the switch to self-extracting rar's was not a good idea.
Could anyone tell me of the benefits of .exe downloads...

Is this the "EP virus" thing? I've seen people moan about it on a bazillion other boards....um, yeah.

I don't know you, you're not my friend.

    I'm full of good ideas..

I think sfx archives is a bad idea.
However, you dont have to run this .exe file you retrived,
    just open it with winrar

People are running into an issue in which, just as thier download finishes, thier virus scanner deletes it as a virus. That leads them to believe it's a virus, and y'know...it's a wasted download. Those two things combined are going to piss quite a few people off.

Very true. I hate it when that happens to me...

Though it's never happend to me here... could just be some virus scanners that delete it.

Ugh, I have horrible problems with that. Pokemon Stadium 2 and PJ64, the things I wanted the most from this site, turned out as trojans.

Is there another area I can get this emulator/this ROM?

The download's were not trojans. A trojan was piggybacking on the file. Somehow the server got infected. Im sure they are working on it.

Those aren't the only ones... I encountered one myself.

This time, it's Super Street Fighter 2X - Grand Master Challenge (as named on the tracker). The torrent downloads SSF2x.tar, which extracts to a 3-part self-extracting RAR, which then extracts a no-extension file (but is a RAR), which finally contains the image in Alcohol format (mdf/mds). Two problems with this:

    1) More than 1 level of compression is completely unnecessary as far as space is concerned (however, double-compression would be fine for making sure a torrent doesn't create a directory). Any compression past first level saves no space.

    2) The self-extraction section of the 3-part RAR is infected with:

    TV Media
    comedy-planet (places itself in startup)
    HyperLinker
    Megasearch (browser hijacker/'toolbar')

And one or two other adware programs whose names escape me at the moment.

Currently there are 4 people seeding this file, and 4 people downloading.

If you are one of the downloaders and see this message, continue at your own risk.

I will be deleting the file in question and not seed it any longer.

Ouch sorry about that, but we can't take responsibly for the content of the tracker. However one of the tracker Admins should delete that torrent and notify the person who added it.

That would be a good thing. I have also taken the liberty of seeding a clean version of the image. I would recommend that anyone downloading that one switch to the newer one.

Edit: As I do not have access to this PC all the time, I would like someone who has a fast connection to grab and seed this image if I have to disappear suddenly.

I've got some bandwidth to spare, so I'm downloading it to be seeded now...
