Default What is your motivation in life?!?

Oh well, my first F4A thread.
Let's start this with my story. I know you all love 'em.

Okay, today, at school, I was talking with 2 of my friends, Bruno and Patrick. Nothing precise, just little quotes like "Hum, its cold and rainy today" and "How was the exam?".

One of the little paraphrase Patrick said was:
"I'm happy, i'm working tonight and tomorrow morning."
So I answered saying something like:
"Why are you so happy? Is money the main thing in your life?"

Now, before continuing, you should all know I don't work and never really "worked" for someone except than me or my buddies.
    First, because I'm lazy
Second, because money ain't my priority
    Third, because I'm lazy X 2

My friends like to stab on this point whenever were talking about working.

-Patrick: Well i'm happy, i'm gonna make some money.

-Me: Yeah and? I don't really see your point of being happy to work for a local shop. You don't really like your job right? Obviously i'm not saying that working is bad, neither gaining some money is, but don't you like having some time for yourself?

-Bruno: Ah, you don't understand. You play puter games all day long....

-Me: ?!? WTF are you talking about. It's not because I don't work or play computer games all day long I can't have a decent opinion on this subject. And you Patrick, your saying that money is the main pivot of your life? (Now i'm thinking their such loosers....) You mean family isn't more important?

-Patrick: Exactly! You need money to live, you can't just sit there and play pc games all day long like you do now. Someday you'll have to work Yves (That's me)...

-Me: I know i'll have to work someday, i'm not denying this fact. But you trully mean family ain't that important for you? Your bro could have some whatever desease, you would work without thinking about him or even helping him?

-Patrick: YEAH! Ah you don't *beep* understand man, you never work. You'll see later (talking about years prolly), you'll love to work.

-Bruno: Cmon man, you don't know a damn thing about it. Just shut up.

-Me: *currently thinking something like "whatever retards"*
Ah cmon, it's not because I don't work now or never really worked for someone I didn't know I don't know how it is to work! But somehow I would rather help my bro then work. I do care much for my family then for my money.

    -Bruno: Whatever!

    -Patrick: ....... >.<

Now the air around us was cold. I was thinking about something, but I just kept that for me. I didn't want to make much more electricity in this situation.
I was thinking about what Patrick said, when I'll be older I'll love to work.
Thinking that 40 years old people going depressive now and then, how they wanted to play with their kids and stay with their wives seeing how they fucked their life working each day like a workaholic. Seeing how they don't even know a ** about what their kids like, what they did at school, what they play at home, what they trully are.

I see those 40 years old people wanting to stay with their family, almost none of them want to work anymore. They did understand what was life....

So I was also thinking, what is our generation motivation? Work? Damn! Everyone who thinks the same is passing right thru his life without really enjoying it.

So I answered something to Patrick, with a little mental diagram.
-Me: Okay, your job is in the center of your life, and on the side of it, you got your family, your girlfriend, your kids, whatever would come there?

    -Patrick: Sure.

    -Me:.........

    -Bruno: Pffft...

Our generation is trully only motivated my money? They care more about loosing a good amount of money then loosing one a family member? Those same family members do got a price on the top of their head then? Where are the true values?

That made me kinda sad, like if I was an old fart in this whole new world, where money should be at the top priority, while the rest should be somewhere under it.

While writing this, I do know i'm not the greatest author of all time, but I dunno, I felt like i had to say that.

For me, family is on top priority, whatever situation would come. If had to loose 1 billion dollars so I could help someone I love, I would do it without thinking.

Oh. Patrick is 20 years old, Italian. I though italians loved their family. Bruno is 17 years old (Almost 18), Canadian. I'm 16 years old (Almost 17, yes, 20 october), Canadian.
I see that the italian thing is maybe still true, just not for this generation.

I dunno really, am I like to old for my body? Am I thinking like someone who worked all his life? I do think i'm kinda mature when I want to, I just like to kid now and then (on the net, at school etc etc)

And you? What is your priority? Am I missing something in the great "Job" idea? Is your work the most important part of our life? Express yourself, I really would like to know what people think about this.

    Thanks.
    Yves

I have a job. I like my job, my job is fun! I'm an editorial illustrator for the youth newspaper called "The Mind's Eye" which is filled of articles and what not by young people all over town who spew some of the most liberal crap I have ever read.
    Anyway, I don't get paid.
Yes, that's right! no money! the Youth cenetr that makes the paper is a non-profit thing that's sponsored by the city.
I'm perfectly fine with that, ofcourse. I get to put some of my stuff out there, and possibly get known.

My job is definitely not the most important part of my life, nor is having money (OH GOD I WISH I HAD SOME MONEY!!!11)
At this moment in time I'm not entirely sure what the most important thing in my life is.. probably a mixture of things.

Schutzstaffel->Well, If you love your job, you don't really count that as a job. More like doing things you like, so putting time in it isn't an effort but more of a pleasure. Over that, your not being paid, so it's definitly something you like to do.

Sad thing is, I don't even know. I care for my family more than money, but I don't care to socialise with them. I care for my friends and socialise sometimes.

I have a want for money, but it seems its not as much as my want for procrastination (forums, IRC, games, anything that isnt study or work).

My whole set of priorities is confused and so am I

I think maybe it's better to be fucked than to be sure of something wrong. I do think that only being motivated by your work is wrong. I don't think your wrong because your not sure what are your motivations, just don't fall in the dark hands of "Teh w0rK3z!".

Money makes life better. I don't give a shit what anyone says, it can buy you happiness. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this guy saying he was happy he was making some money over the next couple of days. Hence, you had no reason to attack him like that.

What the hell is stopping you from working and having a life outside of work?...

Absolutely nothing is stoping you, I just didn't like how his job was the center of his life.
I guess it's your choice to have your job on top priority, but I really feel like people who do that are passing by without enjoying the rest. I'm not going to argue on that either, given the fact that english ain't my first language and it's going to take years to explain what I want to say clearly.

I don't deny that money makes your life better too. I wish I had billions in my bank account, but I preferer being in good term with my family and having fun with them over being uber rich. Yes, I understand what your saying when you say "Money can buy hapiness", but I've always saw that hapiness like a fake one, materialism.
But if you do like your job, and still can be with your friends/family/gf/etc, I don't see a huge problem there.

What I really would like to see, is older members opinion, people over the barrier of 20. Is there old people on this board?

That would be me i guess. Well i'd like to think my job isnt the centre of my life but it is, along with other things. Without work you can't live, work is part of life

work is life, life is work. I do about 42-46 hours a week, cant get around it, got bills etc. But motivation "is" needed for it , if your not caring of the job or motivated to say , most chances are you wont give it 100 % , so then you start slacking, skipping , etc. The boss will give no raise ,which will probably make further depression about the job. Thats my opinion, but I'm still not 100 % motivated to my own job heh ,for me 100 % will only be given when i get a raise (large one) or get a good paying career.

Now that's another thing, your working because you really need to. But do you really want to spend your life doing only this?
Take in mind Patrick and Bruno don't even have bills. They live at their parents house, with almost all paid by his father. Bruno do pay for something, high speed internet and his gas. Patrick is paying for his gas too.
That's about all they got to pay for. They work about 20 hours week, which seems excessive when you got almost no bills to pay and your going to school. Sometimes they don't even come for our first class course because they are too tired....
