Default AntiVirus this, AntiVirus that, Norton just ate my cat....

Norton pretty much sucks for me. I'm looking for an alternate, but having trouble.

I've used MCAfee before, that was just a nightmare.

Perferably one that id free or cheap, that doesn't make you pay $50 a year, and that really *KILL* your Virii

    Thanks in advance

I use VET, it's great. Although you have to pay for it, it's worth it IMHO.
Doesn't take up much of your system, latent scanning of files in use (handy as), generally good.

Definetly go with what TechKnow says. It is the best IMO also. I have never had a problem with it.

I switched from Norton Antivirus 2004 to AVG from grisoft... it's free... free updates... no hassles and it doesn't take a lot of resources from your pc to run. Of being a free antivirus software it's pretty darn good I must say.
It's worth using Master and it does the same thing as Norton does... even email protection even tho you have to download an update program first if you are not using outlook.
But you can see what you need at their website http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php

Actually, I tried it, but hate it. I agree, it is a good anti-virus program, but one problem.....

It only tells you if you have a virus. You have to do a big old search in order to find it. And when you're on a 40 gig drive with 30 gigs used, it takes up to two hours.

Right now I'm using Avast! 4, free edition, and It's good. you can have automatic updates, and updates only take a few seconds. You get updates for free, like AVG, but you are actually a member of Avast. All you have to do is sign up, and you get a serial number in your e-mail!

Thanks for all your help, and AVG is good, but Avast! 4 is better.

You don't have to scan the entire hardrive. With AVG you can do a custom scan of the folder the virus is in. TechTV also recommends AVG as the best free antivirus software. I can scan over 100 gigs in like 30 minutes.

I like avast! a lot more than AVG. AVG is ok, but not great.

knowitman- I have over 30 gigs of data on my computer, and it took about 1 1/2 hours. maybe it's because of my 128 mb ram, but i'm sure it isn't. Could be that it sits and waits for you to delete the things too, before it moves on.

Most of the viruses I get are in the registry, and you can't scan registry files unless you run the full scan, or at least I can't find a way to.

Mushindo, thanks, at least one person agrees.

I don't have the money to re-activate it, and I'm on a dial-up connection at home, so it'll take a few hours to download all the new updates if i uninstall it then reinstall

    [edit]

Also, it takes up too much system memory for me to like it. I have Zone Alarm on top of that, so I'm pretty much safe...

Norton fucks with outlook express, causes slow browsing in millions of end users and is an unresponsive piece of shit who's firewall like to kill itself while blocking internet explorer from using the internet. Search Norotn in Microsofts KB and you'll see literally hundereds of known issues with Nortons defence programs.

With reagrds to the waiting times of AVG scan, I leave my pc on overnight and do a daily scan at 5 am when I'm sleeping. Problem solved.....especially since my soulseek is downloading simultaneously. Bonza.

    Norton is a hideous program.

    0x800ccc0f
    0x800ccc19

These two OE error codes are caused 9/10 by a norton corruption. (Search them here http://support.microsoft.com )If not, then a Macafee corruption. Both are a pile wank.

I have used AVG for four years with no problems. I bought a new laptop which had Norton's Ineternet Cancer and it ran like a dog and let virus' in! Well done Norton! I quickly removed that and replaced it with an AVG and Sygate combo with a more effective AV and less resource drain since Norton acts like a terminal illness for pc's.
