    Question Upload Speed

Hi, When I go to sites like DSLreports.com and test my speed, my upload is like 300 something. But when I use a program so I can send a file like, AIM. It goes down to about 28KB/s

I was just wondering if this is normal... or what... I dont know I'm kinda confused.

    Thoughts? Suggestions? Help?

Depends on network traffic and the speed of the person recieving the file.

Just checked the site, the report is in bits, not bytes.

so your max is around 300/8 = 37.5kb/s

Because your computer is reporting your Port Speed (computer talking to Modem speed) and not the connection speed

I used to have to use the string W2 in my modem advanced settings to get it to report the correct speeds.

My computer reports the modem as "Unknown Modem"

I find it funny it still works...

Well it can simply use Standard Windows drivers Doesn't really bother Windows too much, other than stuff like the port speed will be reported instead of connection speed.

Windows has pretty decent generic modem drivers.

Yeah, probably the only decent thing about it.

I better stop posting, probably classed as spamming or some such thing...

    Drool everyone
(Still, that is kinda slow, i should download in at least 700kb/s and upload at the same speed.)

I like your connection there ifrit

And if you use anything on UDP like zsnes netgames then you get less overhead than with tcp. (but no error checking or packet confermation to my knowledge) but zsnes does reccomend UDP so it should be nice and lagless.

what on earth am I going on about...

Not sure why you brought that up, Norgus.

What is it UDP skips anyway? SYN/ACK?

I don't think it checks for corruption (the crc check) or waits for confermation that a packet was recieved.

So thats why zsnes gets badly out of sync if you don't use 2 computers with good framerate. And im guessing TCP/IP laggs up because of the overhead causing added latency.

(no I don't know very indepth but I havnt really studied it so nya!)

So, I know thats not close to great, but is that a pretty decent speed for DSL? (upload)

by the way, the guy who I was trying to send a file to said it was D/Ling around 10kb/s.
