    Default Hard Disk Problem

Alright, so ive got this new 20 Giger in my Pentium 3, starts up fine, was a little slow. But when i go into Windows 2K, it wont show it up. Its a Seagate ST320423A, and its beginning to give me the royal shits. Thanks for the help.

Is there any way you can back it up? If so, do it immediately, then go download the diagnostic tools from www.seagate.com and check your harddrive

It doesn't have anything on it yet, i put it in and it doesn't show up. It appears in the System Properties, but it doesn't show as an actual physical drive in My Computer.

Odd problem then - as long as it has been partitioned (as something the OS understands) then there shouldn't really be any issues.

Depends on how old it is, as I assume the usage of the word 'new' in the first post was in reference to it being newly installed in your computer (and not newly purchased).

If I were you I'd give it a nice Fdisk again, then see if it's accessible via Dos. If it is, then it could theoretically be some whacked out OS setting.

It is new, as in i just collected it. I'd say its about 6 months or so old, but i can be sure...ill give it another lash in DOS, and hope that works...

We had a similar problem here in school. A hard disk was detected by bios, but when attempting to install w2k, it says that no hard disk is found. Can't really know why. Hope that we sometime figure it out.

It'd be nice, it really would. Im downloading those Seatools now, for those of you playing at home. I'm hoping they tell me my HD is still good, and that all it needs is another FDisking, cause i don't want to put up with Seagate Reps...

I'm goingt to test Samsungs Disk Manager on school's hd. It helped me to get my new 160gb partitied, while win98's fdisk can only handle disks up to 64gb.

I don't know if this will help or not, but if you have it as a master then you have to have the jumper on the back of the drive set to master.

and if you have it piggy-backing off of your other drive then you must set the jumper to slave.

probably isnt helpfull but its all I can think of. If neither of those work try setting the jumper to 'cable select'.

I'd checked all that stuff first off, thanks for trying though Norgus. The BIOS wouldn't have detected either of my hard drives if they were both Masters anyway...
