    what is all i need to have my computer hooked up to my friends laptop to play games and to trade music and movies of the sorts? he will be in my house

    get a router and some cat5 cables. Read the Instructions that come with the Router on how to hook it up

    It would also be a lot easier if you both have Windows XP. I would recommend what kiTTie said. You are creating a small network, and you just transfer files. You can get up to 100 mbps. That should be fast enough.

    If u dont have those, u cant use null-modem cable
    (link via com or lpt).
    Pretty low speed (but enough to play games) -
    BUT u can make it yourself and ALL COMPUTERS have those ports.

    Isn't this possible using just a Cat5 Crossover cable?

    yeah, it would be possible and if it's just for two people I would suggest using a cat5 crossover cable.
