Linux isn't warez because it is free. There are many distros out there. Each distro has different features and bundled program with it. If you want to get linux you have to do a lot of research. There are many people on this board that use it. They can provide you with more help.

It all depends on what you do or plan on doing.

If you just want to check it out, a rather simple and painless distro would be Knoppix. Just boots directly off CD and writes nothing to the HD, kinda cool.

www.suse.com, painless great hardware auto detect, also offers liveCDs can use the OS right off the cd.

www.mandrake.com, very usefriendly OS, have had some problems with my NIC on this OS though ><

www.redhat.com, very userfriendly from what I've heard.

    www.debian.org, less userfriendly, very secure.

as delboy said Knoppix is a graet way to try out linux, it boots from the CD and runs in a created ramdisk (so 128 megs of ram or above recomended).

Im actually running knoppix right now as I speak to you, and I have been for almost a week now. I just created a small partition so that I can keep settings and such saved.

If you want a distro to install, install debian from a running knoppix boot once everything is configured how you like it (most stuff is autoconfigured perfectly) much easyer to run than even windows I think.

If you want to go with the most power you should get gentoo or second to that slackware, both of these are very powerfull and allow you to learn about the system, but are also more complex.

On with the links!knopix can be found at http://knoppix.net/ , gentoo at http://www.gentoo.org/ and slackware at http://www.slackware.com .

I can reccomend knoppix for your needs highest.
