sorry 4 the double post but I use SuSE and it rocks cuz its big and comes on like 7 cds (2 dvds) and includes every piece of software u'l ever need and a whole lot more.
I use mandrake .
I need, I want, I care, I weep, I ache, I am. I said, I am.
I use Gentoo, because I cant get my AC'97 sound chipset to work on any of the other distros.
I tried Red Hat, but I couldn't get my cable modem to work with it. Thought I might try others, but never got around to it.
I took a Linux class last summer; rather interesting.

I've used Debian, Suse, and Mandrake, and have the best experience with Suse, so that's what I voted for.
I've got the same chipset and I don't know if you've tried Mandrake but it seems to run okay for me.Originally posted by torpedo009

Yep, I've tried both Mandrake 9.1 and 9.2, no success.....What did you do to get it to work????Originally posted by NimaGraven

I honestly don't remember but I'm sure I had the same problem when using that Winamp like program (xmms is it?) on mandrake and sorted it by fiddling around with the sound stuff..Originally posted by torpedo009

Maybe if you use google and do a search you'll find out..
It was a real long time ago.. So sorry, I just don't remember.

I use Slackware
So solution: Buy a Soundblaster Live! . Works great! Internal AC97 sucks >.< got one on my mobo.Originally posted by NimaGraven

It does suck.. It relies on slightly more processing power than a completely seperate card like the soundblaster live one .. But.. I'm not sure what it was but I think Soundblaster Live has some compatibility problems with certain things.. It was something I read a while back..Originally posted by Ace

Debian pwns! Installs with only 1 cd, updates everything online.
and apt-get owns all muahaha

Hmm. I tried both Red Hat and Mandrake in past, but had some problems with hardware and stopped using them. In hindsight, this probably had more to do with me not knowing how to use the OS than with the distros.
Now I've settled on Slackware 9.1, which I've been using ever since. I've learned a lot more about how linux works while using it. And my network card works
hmm. 8.x was 7. wonder what they cut out.Originally posted by Ace
