Thumbs down Almost flipped the car into a ditch

Whooo, this was the worst thing that ever happened to me. Recently, we just got this snowstorm, and the main roads were plowed, the backroads were kinda plowed. Anyway, there's this part in the backroad that's like a little hill, that makes a small turn and another turn again to continue where you were going (it really looks like it's just avoiding a tree, so it's almost like an "S".)

So there I was going 10 MPH, but a van was coming in at the other lane, so I had to use the other one (covered with snow, but I slowed down thinking it was enough). Usually, cars go through the center of that turn, ignoring the yellow lines because the turn is that small. Well, using the brakes locked up the car and it kept going. Now here's something you don't know about this particular turn, there's a log down the hill that will flip your car if you flipped, and a ditch with running water waiting for you at the bottom to complete it.

I was right at the edge, looking down right at the ditch. The van went off, I wasn't mad at it, he probably didn't notice. I stepped out of the car, and what really saved it was the whole bottom part of my car working with what little friction it had at the edge of this ditch.

The back-left side of my car was easily 4-feet in the air, I called the police and the tow truck (took the tow truck a nice while but oh well) so I was having a nice chat with the policeman, we were even laughing and talking about movies.

Well back to the car; it was so close to falling over that if I had one person on the passenger seat, or if I even went 3 more miles an hour (I'm a careful driver ) that would've been the end of the car hands down.

Finally, the tow-truck comes, pulls the car off. Absolutely NO damage whatsoever to it. Still rides smooth, not even the wheels need realligning. We said our goodbyes and I drove to school right from the scene.

Looking back on it, I shouldn't have counted on the breaks, I should've let it go and roll (physics would easily tell us to do this, but as it's happening, panic took over). Also, it was a narrowly plowed street, with the center really being the only plowed part. I should've stopped and let the other car go through and then go on. The whole thing I guess was just due to a lack of inexperience. Luckily, I wasn't hurt, the car wasn't damaged, and I didn't get a ticket or added points to insurance.

Those kind of roads are typical for Japan. Actually they are soooo small it's really just a one lane road but for two cars. Lately we have gotten snow about everyday but the cool thing about the place I live is the roads are built for snow if it happens. One place has a built in heating pad thing under the road to melt the snow if it forms. and another place has a thing like a sprinkler that pours out hot water to melt the snow... it's pretty sweet... first time I have ever seen anything like that... but then again... I come from the dessert... is that kind of stuff available in other countries?

Hahahaha, dont expect our western governments to be spending money on stuff like public safety! Of corse we dont get such cool things.

    About the storey:
Sounds like a really close call, that. Im glad you got out of it without anything particularly negative happening!

    Thanks Norgus.

NihonjinTaylor: I didn't see such things when I was in Japan...then again it must be something fairly new.

my brother always seemed to drive into the ditch a lot.

so my dad said to get him a sticker that says 'Life's a Ditch" as opposed to "Life's a B****"

That is a pretty close call. Atleast you got out alright. Where I used to live there were plenty of crappy roads like that...but I couldn't drive back then so I guess it didn't really matter.

LOL, if the goverment ever puts in those heat pads or sprinklers, I will shave my head bald put tar and feathers on it and walk around like a duck for the rest of my life....HA!

Close call there Eggo. I've almost went into a ditch, cept i wasn't paying attension and i slid almost into it, and i turned the wheel fastly the other way and i got out of that situation quite nicely, but then i went into the other lane and nearly missed a car, then i sweaved back into my lane, and drove away safely. The only damage done here is to my nerves

i'm afraid to drive.. people are afraid to ride in cars with me.. i have a lead foot.. either i'm standing on the gas or standing on the brakes.. i've never got into an accident but it won't be long at the speeds that i travel at.. 60mph on a narrow, one way back road..? not good at all.. i once came close to crashig my father's audi just by trying to park it.. i was two inches away from his garage.. scary shit..
