You don't use software to overclock (ignore software overclockers for video cards), you do it via the bios. However since you didn't know about this I suggest that you DO NOT do this.

There was a software called "fsb" something... I forget the name, you can find it at majorgeeks.com It just does a software FSB overclock. But like Rif-Raff said you shouldn't overclock your system if you don't know what your doing as it can lead to burning some components or your whole system.

listen...overclocking is highly complex,if you don't know what you're doing.DO NOT try this unless, you're doing it with someone who knows his stuff.a friend of mine, actually ended up burning his computer while doing this...:\

yes...overclocking...*clears throat*...

No matter what someone tells you, you can use overclocking to melt the gold from a processor.

True story...gather 'round, chit'lins:
Ok...experimenting with overclocking is bad; I can tell you first hand. Never...ever...EVER set your P II 200 to the voltage and jumpers for a P III 700...it was bad. I came into the room five minutes later, and black smoke was issuing from my case. After rumaging through the wreckage, I found a puddle of dried gold on the cpu slot, my memory was glued in from the heat of the connectors, and there was a faint smell of utter failure...moral of the story is...

Don't drink dirty dogs!
Uhh...wrong one.

Basically, check all these off before you start overclocking:

1) You have had the system for a while.
2) You know every single one of its quirks. (My AMD XP machine sometimes boots without USB)
3) If something goes wrong, you won't lose your best friend.
4) COOLING!!! I cannot stress this enough. If you have the standard collling fan and heatsink that came with the CPU, don't do it. Your CPU can't stand the heat. Ideally, you should have approx. half the reccomended system and CPU temp. with decent cooling before you start overclocking.
5) Read. Read, read, re-read, and then read again. If you've ever put together components, you would know this...take the line from the hacker's manifesto to heart: If it doesn't work, it's not because it doesn't like me, or that it thinks I'm a smart-ass...It's because I screwed up. Don't flame me for the misquote, it's been a while. Read the manuals, read them over again, then check into it some more online...who knows. your MB or CPU might not be overclockable.

Follow these guidelines, don't go too far with it, and you should be fine. Just check into your BIOS, your jumpers, consult your manuals...it's a lot of work. BTW, what kind of specs has this comp got?

Also, if you happen to see black smoke issuing from your case...put it out of its misery. Don't try to boot a smoking computer, becasue just as in real life, smoking is bad.

That's weird, my brother's AMD XP does exactly the same thing... It's somewhat of a pain in the arse...

I tried overclocking my CPU from 1.7 Ghz to 2.0 Ghz and it did not go well. Nothing broke, cause I didn't take it too far, but my comp kept resetting whenever the processer usage got too high. It took me about 15 tries to get it to go long enough for me to undo the overclocking. My advice is to just not mess with this at all.

When used properly overclocking can be a good thing.

I have my P4 2.4Ghz running at 2.88GHz for a few months now and no problems. (case temp dose get a little hot under heavy CPU usage tho :p)

I have a bad expirence w/ my old computer, My P2 233. I dismanted the case and stuff, my friend gave me some cooling pointers so I decided to give it a try. I overclocked it and everything was working fine. I got out of the room (NEVER EVER GO OUT OF THE ROOM!!!) and came back w/ a pop. I walked in the room and noticed it was really hot. I look @ my comp and it's surrounded by black smoke. Panicing, I opened my Pepsi and spilled it on the mini fire (yes a fire!) and that was pretty stupid. I ended up finding a lifetime warrenty paper that I got w/ the comp and ended up getting a new P2 234 Procceser.

lol, so basically, I overclocked it one MHZ LMAO

I have a new comp now and it is a AMD Athlon XP 3000+, and I am satisfied w/ its performance and am not going to try to overclock it. (Or i might spill pepsi on it )

Probably because it's using a Via 4in1 rather than a Nforce2 (might be the other order). USB is an older tech now so it's possible the bios to have native support for it, and due to glitches in the bios it may sometimes not work. (Via have had a lot of bugs in their bioses). It'd be useful if you had a USB cd-rom or something you wanted to boot from.
