Default I want to know if this is legal...

The 7pin ribbon cable on my PS2 snapped in half a couple of weeks ago. I emailed sony and asked if i could buy a replacement part for it since i know what the problem is and know how to fix it. I dont wanna spend like 30 bucks to get it repaired when i know the problem myself. (Plus i dont want to buy parts from other sites, especially when they come from Hong Kong. I just dont trust that stuff.. And god knows what will happen on its way from Japan to the east coast of the U.S.) They emailed me back saying the would not sell me any of the parts for the PS2. Heres a part of the letter:

We regret to inform you that we do not sell internal or external parts, schematics, or repairmanuals for the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system as they are proprietary to ourauthorized repair facilities. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience. If you would like information on how to get your system repaired, we are better able to assist you with your situationby speaking with you directly. Please call our Consumer Services Department at (800) 345-7669. Our representatives are available to assist you, Monday through Saturday 6:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., andSunday 7:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m., Pacific Standard Time.

Additionally, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) does not recommend anyone other than anauthorized Sony Service Center (SSC) Technician opening the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system. Doing so will immediately void the SCEA Warranty, and your PlayStation 2 system may not be repaired*.*Note: If any of the original components or parts are removed, altered, modified, or have been tampered with, our SSC Technician will deem the unit not repairable, and return your system back to you.

Now my PS2's warrenty is up meaning i could do anything with it... So is it legal for them not to sell a replacement part to a costumer??

Yes, it is perfectly leagle for them to not offer replacement parts even though you have no warranty with them. The reason for this is simple, Sony gets to decide what products they sell. They choose not to sell replacement parts because a) they don't want anyone else to open the PS2 as mentioned in the email you recieved and b) They really want you to buy a new PS2 when the one you have breaks.

By the way, I have news for you about your worries about the parts you can get ahold of comming from japan.. Are you ready for this? Most likely the whole PS2 you own was built in Japan and shipped to the US.

To answer 2H-Dragon's question, I am sure most of the parts in a PS2 are proprietary (spelling) so I would not advise using standard computer parts. Whether or not the ribbon cable is special, I don't know but I would do some research before trying to replace anything in a gaming console with standard PC parts.

I realize that it comes from Japan.. But it comes from Sony.. not from a 3rd party store... Theres a big difference there... Well off to buy a new one..

Technically they sold you a box that your not allowed to open, but rather send back to them and pay 60$ for them to fix.

    I suggest www.Lik-Sang.com

Hmmmm simple math here 9 < 60. $9.00 plus shipping still < $60.00. I think the choice is obvious if this is the correct cable. Remember SJawz3288 said he was looking for a 7 pin ribbon cable not a 5 pin. Maybe it really is a 5 that is needed but I don't know.

Byt the way, you are allowed to open the box. It's not illeagle. It just voids the warranty. So if you have no warranty because either it expired or you bought it second hand, you have nothing to loose by opening the machine.

Here you go. This link will take you straight to the 7pin cable that you are talking about. It happens to be the exact price of the 5 pin cable. Go figure. Let us know what you decide to do and if it works.

You nailed it right on the head. It's also to discourage people from doing anything where you have to open the case like you would for say... a mod chip. There is always a way to get in without hurting anything though. You just have to be really careful. If you know what too expect that always helps too.
