    Default See my PC....Any suggestions....

    Hi there guys,

I will be getting my Brand New PC within a couple of days....

    Here is the configuration.

Pentium 4, 2.40 GHz (C, 800 mhz bus system) with HT Technology.
Intel D865 GLC motherboard (AGP slot and onboard video card).
    256 DDR.
40 GB Samsung HDD 7200 RPM.
    Sony CD writer 52 x 24 x 52.
    Sony Floppy Drive.
    Microsoft Mouse.
    IBM Keyboard.
LG Studioworks 15 " Color Monitor.

    Any suggestions to this....??

I will be adding a good video card later in the near future coz right now I am going to invest the rest of my money in a NEW Playstation 2.

The same thing goes with the HDD too and a DVD rom drive. and soon will be adding an PS2 to PC adapter for using the PS2 analog controller for PC games....

I am gonna use this PC for my Medical Transcription work and PURE GAMING....

Any other suggestions or "known problems" with the above configuration, PLEASE LET ME KNOW....

    Thanx in Advance....

The CD-Rewriter is too fast, I'd get a combo drive instead. Also I'd swap the Intel for an AMD based system but thats just me.

The hardware guy that is providing me with this PC says that this Sony writer 52 x 24 x 52 is the latest and the price is almost the same or I think its cheaper than 48 x 12 x 48....

And as for the combo drive you are talking, In India there is only one combo drive available and that is Samsung Combo drive with a cd writer and a DVD rom drive both of them in one drive....but the problem is that the reviews have not been good of that product and the sales are quite low....my hardware guy also suggested not going for that... and suggested may be getting a DVD rom later in the future or a DVD writer after its prices come down...

Anyways, Thanx for the reply Lord Riff Raff, I really appreciate it....any other suggestions....??

    Any other people...??

256 DDR isn't enough, you're going to want 512+ if you're serious about gaming. Investing in a new sound card(Audigy 2) would improve your gaming experience as well.

riff raff is a poo poo head Intel is much better than AMD, if you can afford Intel. And theres nothing wrong with your CD-RW, just burn at slow speeds if your not in a hurry. Just cause its 52x dosent mean you need to burn at 52x...

And combo drives are expensive and pretty lame. I would much rather have 2 seperate drives, if you have room in the case for them. With 2 drives its much faster and easyer to copy CDs.

I would get a bigger monitor tho, 17 inches plus. And make sure its a flat screen.

EDIT: Make sure your DDR ram is 400Mhz!!!!!! Then you should be able to OC your CPU to at least 2.88Ghz. My setup is very simmilar to yours, same CPU and chipset.

Okay, will check out with my hardware guy as to what will be the price difference on the ram....

And about the audio card, I thought the onboard will be enough....but still will check it out....

Me too, I have more trust in Intel than AMD....and obviously I won't be burning my CDs at that high speed...

Okay, so even DDR rams have speeds........so will check out that too.....and what do you think about the DDR ram jerome187, will 256 be sufficient or should I go for the 512 DDR ram....???

By the way, what do you mean by "OC your CPU to at least 2.88Ghz"

Thanx for all you help....all of you get a 5 vote for that, If I haven't already done that .

    Any more suggestions....

I would get 2 sticks of 256MB 400Mhz ddr ram, that way your motherboard can run them in dual channel mode.

When I say "OC your CPU to 2.88Ghz" I mean you will be able to overclock your Intel Pentium 4 2.4Ghz CPU to 2.88Ghz, so you get much more bang for your buck. Overclocking is pretty easy, at least on my gigabyte motherboard. You will probbly only have to change one setting in your bios to overclock it. I'll help you do that once you get the computer.

Okay, I will ask my hardware guy to give me 512 DDR ram and will check out the price difference....and will also tell him to give me 400 mhz speed DDR ram....

By the way, is there any way by which I can understand whether my hardware guy is REALLY giving me a 400-mhz DDR ram....

I just wanna make sure of it..

I also checked out the intel website. In that, they said that in this motherboard you can specify a fixed amount of ram on your PC to be only used for game graphics processing. I mean to say (as they said) that if you are having 256 mb DDR ram then up to a maximum of 64 mb DDR ram can be dedicated solely for graphics processing....I wanted to know that will that make a difference in graphics guality or gameplay.

As far as overclocking is concerned, if it is "SAFE", then there is no problem coz I just don't wanna blow up my new P4 and its motherboard .

Thanx for all your help....I really appreciate....

Oh, one more thing, any more suggestions, always welcome....

you can check the speed of the ram in the bios. and overclocking is pretty safe, just make sure it dosent overheat and you'll be fine.

using the shared video ram thing is going to effect your speed pretty bad, from my experience. I would get a new GFX card asap, even if its just a old GeForce2 or something cheap like that.

just a warning, before you actually oc'ing.
do it slowly and observe. don't jump to high. (i guess intel has a good cooling system so i guess it should be no problem oc'ing a little bit, but why u wanna do that to your BRAND-NEW cpu though).

oh btw, one vote also for riff-raff
for me, remember that the P6 wasn't fully pipelined where K7 did?
well...that' s just me too. i like the amd
but let's not get into a flame war here...just personal opinions. you should really go with what you really like.

The reason I suggested the AMD is that they don't need as much as of a cooling system as the P4, and with the extra cash you could afford more ram. Also you'd be able to get a Nforce2 powered board which easily beat the competition.

Finally have you ever had a CD explode on you? We've had 4 at work and trust me you never should burn with 52X drives unless your using top of the line disks.

Okay jerome187, I won't do the video ram sharing thing...and as for the video card, I will be getting it asap....

Shadowrider, you are right....Right now, I am really not thinking of oc'ing my BRAND-NEW cpu....

StrideS, that flat screen monitor does not fit in my budget right now....coz there is a NEW PS2 waiting for me somewhere out there and am gonna get is ASAP....

That I have heard for the first time.. Anyways, I will remember to use "top of the line disks" for burning at high speeds....and "low quality" at slow speeds. Thanx for that info.....

Okay, at the end of this, I have decided to go for the Intel processor and 256 DDR400 ram and in the near future will get another stick of 256 DDR400 ram and a 40 GB hard disk and will be getting a good sound and a video card in the near future......

Coz right now, the rest of my money is going into the NEW PS2.

I have made my PC's configuration "future proof" like you can say, in the future I can add a good video card with the AGP slot....and right now the onboard 32-bit video card is fine for me....and will increase the ram too....

Thanx for all you help guys, I really appreciate it.
