When you set it up you might need to power the hdd first before turning on (boot) the player.
HDD's with dedicated power don't need this, but sometimes I've seen usb only powered drives confuse the media player and not power up properly. Power the drive first then boot the player.

I'm running a 4TB drive right now on one of my players using a separate usb power adapter.

The cheap media players and even some older quality players just aren't designed to run larger usb powered drives. The port(s) just don't provide enough power. Even if you have multiple ports on the cheap players (and split the power from the other port) you can see some lag in menus and shit, it's just basic hardware.

CoreElec or LibreElec are better alternatives to the factory OS. Lighter OS and also usually improved container/codec support.

You could try popping it open to check the chipset. I did that for mine.
Is it still running crappy stock OS?

yes. I don't know if it'd be worth it if I could change it. the thing was made in 2015.

The older one I have here might be that old. It has LibreElec on it. The main one I use is a bit newer, it's an X96 Mini running CoreElec and runs x265 @1080p fine.

You might look into an older NUC or a thin client depending on what you want out of it.

    For example:
    Dell Wyse 5070
    NUC6i5SYH or SYK (H has space and a tray for a 2.5" HDD and K doesn't)

You want to make sure everything you want is included. With a thin client you aren't likely to find accessories separate and with a NUC you can get a better deal by being patient and buying what you want from the start (ie. larger SSD, HDD, more memory).

Something like this should do fine as well:
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/255186968611
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/175602311894

Be sure to look into the HW first as well since with random stuff like the second link might be harder to find drivers for Winblows.

all I'm wanting is basically what I have now just a bit better(no more bugged playback or seeking no random disconnects from media or it not being read at all)having a/v out as well as hdmi(more than 1 usb port would be nice too)
what I have now is ok but has problems that were more of a minor annoyance till now.
