The cheapest price I've seen in a while was $15/TB for a 12TB drive. I thought about buying one or two but I've been pruning my storage and don't need to expand for now.

That's around $22aud per TB.

You mean like last year or something though yeah? I haven't seen any 10-12TB drives that cheap when I looked over the last week or so.

12TB is more like over $350aud now, closer to $30aud per TB ($20usd per TB).

It would be nice if prices started dropping faster since sales are down. I expect they'll milk it out as much as possible.

Prices also go up for reasons like short supply (the Thai floods years ago) and materials costs (which are going up).

Steel in particular I suspect is more expensive since the Chinese unofficially blocked coal imports from Australia. Both types iirc, for steel (coking) and electricity generation (thermal).

But you can't force the costs involved to be cheaper.

Old stock you might be able to get cheap. Like it has been in a warehouse in NA for 6-12 months already.
New stuff; the costs involved actually making it and transporting it are higher now. And the higher prices usually persist sometime after costs drop anyway.

Chinese economy growth is pretty low right now, technically it's closer to a stall than it was during the first year of covid.

I'm fairly sure the prices were artificially inflated due to Chia mining. I haven't seen any press announcements whinging about costs increasing.

There probably will be cost increases but I think there's room to drop.

I'm telling you it's coal and the like. The Chinese aren't buying as much Aussie coal (both types) as they were a few years back. They do buy the same amount of coal but it's more expensive than buying ours.
Hence production costs are higher.

It might change soon (they could start buying a lot of our cheaper coal again) but the costs changes won't flow through for months.
They're hurting themselves and consumers worldwide basically.

Well, I went ahead and bought this the other day. It was on sale for $1349. I love it.

EDIT: What I don't love is that apparently three of the USB ports(2 type a and one type c) are not working and diagnostics gave me a hardware failure. I'm on chat with HP right now and they said it either needs to be sent to HP for service or since I am in my timeframe, take it to Bestbuy and get another. They have one left down the street from me.... ugh. Why couldn't it just work right? It's totally awesome otherwise. Hopefully the replacement I get will be fine.

I've been keeping my eye out for a 12TB external at a good price. Never can have enough digital space.
