Default J1_UNK1 Controller Error on ePSXe

I have a PS4 controller for ePSXe using DS4Windows. When I try to configure it through Gamepads=>Port 1=>Pad 1 by clicking on the control button, it'll say J1_UNK1. Then when I try to play a game the controller won't respond.

    I don't have this problem with PCSX2.

Please post whichever versions of ePSXe and DS4Windows you're using. You may want to consider trying a different Playstation emulator.

A couple of things to check:

Make sure the controller is plugged in BEFORE you start the emulator - plugging it in after will do nothing.

You may have to configure each button manually. Config => Gampad => Port 1 => pad 1 and a picture will pop up of a controller, click on each button and then press the corresponding one on your controller to map it and hit ok when done.

Also keep in mind that older games were digital only before the dual shock came out - when in game you can switch between digital and analog with F5 (you can also change it in the options as well)

Yes, all that is correct but the same thing still happens.

I also tried doing this. J1_UNK1 doesn't appear when I click on the control button and appears normal but when I start the game the controller doesn't respond when I press the buttons. It might be because when I try to mark the checkbox for ePSXe under Name, it won't happen no matter how many times I click it.

Can you post a screenshot of the controller settings page?

And which game are you testing?

It's pretty much every game I load so it's not the game(s).

Are you trying that when ePSXe is running or not running? If you can't tick it with the emulator running then try when it isn't or vice versa. I was able to get it working under DS4W 1.4.52 by adding ePSXe to the profiles via browse and setting controller 1 to the default profile. If you can't get it working I'd suggest using a different controller or trying a different emulator.

Fixed it by setting the controller up through Steam.

Good to hear you got it working.

If Steam was running in the background before it's possible that Steam was causing the problem. There were problems in the past with Steam's controller settings interfering with other software not running via the client. I don't know if it's been fixed or not since I don't use Steam.
