Progressive is better for a lot of things.
But with old consoles interlaced appears natural and authentic (on crt) without having to simulate scan lines etc using modern trickery (which is what a lot of people tend to do when upscaling on modern panels).

Technically it's more than what I said. Just simplified it...
That station broadcast in 480i is just standard definition.
If it was a 480p broadcast it would be enhanced definition, not HD although some people still think 480p is HD, it isn't.
720p is the lowest form of HD.
Then there's 1080i and 1080p which are both full HD (one is interlaced and the other is progressive).
