It's a SATA drive but m2 form. I replaced it with another m2 SATA since it was cheap and I don't need anything faster.

I have a 128GB samsung m2 sitting here. Nothing to use it in though
Spoiler warning:
I would have given you common roms for it .
I don't get what m.2 HDD/SDD is for. It looks like a RAM stick. I suppose its super faster or something? A normal looking SSD would be good enough for me.
Different form factor (SSD only). NVMe can be a lot faster but it doesn't matter for most purposes or users. An m2 SATA drive would be the same as a 2.5" SATA version aside from the form and connector.
DirectStorage will probably be used to push NVMe sales since it would be something the masses can make use of. I don't expect a lot to come out of it for games unless it gets automated integration with big engines (ie. Unreal or Unity) since most developers seem to be incompetent these days.

I have a sata ssd. Samsung 850 evo 250gb as my Windows drive. To be honest I don't know if it's really all that faster than a mechanical drive on the same sata 3 port on the mobo
The only sata SSD I have is 2.5" Corsair 240GB (sata 3). I have that setup to use with my PSTV.
Could use it in one of my laptops but I prefer to keep using 1TB platters in those... more space.

Sounds pretty much like mine.
I just drilled it straight into a 3.5" bay
It should be considerably faster but whether or not it's noticeable for most uses, hard to say . It's nice to have for startup/shutdown times but once you boot into the OS a good HDD is still fine enough for most things. I think most people only notice a difference if they're swapping from a piece of garbage 2.5" HDD. You could probably swap in a good HDD and most wouldn't be able to tell unless they heard it spinning up.

A slightly slower boot time doesn't bother me. I don't play games on these laptops.
I couldn't live with less than 500GB internal HDD now Would need to have an external attached to it all the time to deal with torrents, PS4 fpkg etc.
The space 1TB internal gives me is more important, I still need to move downloads off my main every couple of days as it is

Second laptop has 1TB too but I don't use it as much. It's for setting up external HDD, USB and cards for consoles.
Spoiler warning:
You couldn't put normal sata in there? For more space.

I have the smaller case version which doesn't have space for it (non-standard power connector on the board as well). I've got a parts listing of one of the larger case versions watched on eBay but I'm not interested unless the price drops.
