I got a family member 4x4TB drives from here for a media PC a few months ago. They all have a lot of hours and such but seem to be in reasonable overall condition for $11.25/TB (discounted to $45/drive when buying 2+). The site also has a bunch of SAS drives but you'd need a controller card (flashed) and cables for them.

That's like $65aud each. For a little more ($15-20aud) you can get 3.5" 4TB drives in external powered cases, brand new. Just rip them out of the enclosures to use in a desktop if you want.
Also, that 2.5" ext seagate drive I got recently that actually had a sata interface inside, those are around the same. I haven't checked the specs but I assume they use less power than 3.5" drives.

A new 4TB drive is around $70 - $100+ here, depending on speed. I could rip them out of externals but that's a coin flip as to what drive you get .

What's the sequential transfer speed on the 2.5" you pulled?

Dunno, I didn't test that and I never do really. I mainly use laptops and only one of them has USB 3. It is actually seagate though. I've never seen a 2.5" that thick before.
Have to work today, but I can pop the case open again in the next couple of days and give you the drive model so you can look it up if you want (just remind me again in a day or so in case I forget).

Anything substantially cheaper is a good deal though Used drives I tend to only get now for pocket change via work, but before (years back) I did buy some used drives.

I think this is the first time I've bought any used drives for more than dirt cheap. I wanted to get it up and running quickly for cheap. If there are any decent sales on large externals later in the year I might see if they're interested in picking some up to dump their BDs on.

My main source for desktop drives are PVR's, either with or without DVD. 2.5" drives come from faulty laptops, Xbox 360 & PS3 etc.
Even if they're smaller drives like 250GB or whatever I still reuse them for backing up roms etc.

Just about everything is on either reddit (you need to base64 decode first) or dlpsgame (the links there are JD compatible).
