Generally speaking the x265 rips are mostly the same quality, 1080p stuff ends up being much smaller sizes. I don't have a 4k panel so I obviously can't look at the really high quality rips anyway.

Even the Hi10 x264 DVD rips I have look really nice but at the same time aren't ridiculously huge sizes.

Yeah most of the 1080p rips aren't aiming to be vastly better looking tho, it's more about the same or slightly better quality for much smaller size.

    eg
Star Trek TNG S7 (BD source)...
    x264 8bit 1080p 6ch DTS = 85GB
    x265 10bit 1080p 6ch AAC = 18GB

With the above, x264 rip has better audio but lower quality video.
The x265 rip audio isn't massively inferior (but it is noticeable), it still has 6 channels and does the job well enough for most people.
The size difference for just one season is quite large.

For this above example I own the BD's anyway, so it's just the convenience of having rips I can play on my tv and them not taking up hundreds of GB's.

atm I'm looking at replacing my X-Files 1080p rips. A lot of space to save there.
Macgyver I can easily replace my 720p rips with 1080p and save space.
I'll have to browse through my drives... I probably have some 1080p>SD rips I can upgrade to higher quality.

Great reduction in size. I always preferred giving extra bitrate to audio when I ripped stuff. Nowadays I rip the whole disc .

Yeah DTS is good and all but if I'm just using my tv speakers it's kinda overkill Now I have a choice to use x265 but I didn't in the past.
If I want really good audio through my theatre system I can spin up the BD's.

This little thing seems to upscale pretty well too, I'm running 576p Hi10 x264 DVD rips through Kodi on it upscaled to 1080p atm and it looks better than anything else I have that upscales DVD. Yeah it still has some artifacts like the crazy lines you can sometimes see (eg fine wire mesh on flyscreen doors, also some types of clothes but it isn't common) but there's no sign of blocking and nearly no jagged shit even for action scenes. Basically the common stuff you see is hardly there at all. Pretty impressive for a cheap bit of Chinese Android crap

I think this can run straight DVD dumps and maybe BD too... might have to check that out maybe. Don't really have the space for a collection like that but it would be interesting to see for possible future use.

I can't imagine it would have any trouble with playing those, maybe BDs.

Checked out the first 2 eps of Boba. Not great but not bad. Ming-Na still looks pretty good for a woman pushing 60 too.
