The plugin should run fine once you enable it.
    Make vsh.txt
    Add "ms0:/seplugins/category_lite.prx 1"

That should be all you need to do.

IDK how or why Homebrew Sorter would muss up the file order, nor have I fiddled with any category options. I just used the select-file/rearrange-file option which seemed idiot proof, so I'm zero help with the further conversation
*PSA* Wii Redump collector's can now unscrub ISO files. So scrubbed games can now be verified. You can find the program to do this here

Apparently you need the plugin installed for categories to work with Homebrew sorter. It makes sense but I don't know why they wouldn't explicitly mention it in the readme .

The readme from the above, an older version of the categories plugin, most of which probably still applies to the newer version for 6.XX:
    Spoiler warning:
Game Categories v 9.0 by Bubbletune
    http://bubbletune.x-fusion.co.uk/
    -----------------------------------

    Instructions:
    -------------

    1) Move the 'seplugins' folder to the root of your Memory Stick (edit vsh.txt if you have more plugins).
    2) Reboot your PSP and go to your System Settings menu, a new option saying 'Game Categories Mode' will be there.
    3) Select one of the three modes:
    - Multiple MS: A new Memory Stick icon will show up for each category you have.
    - Content Browser: This complete replacement for the menu is based on patching of the Photo modules.
    - Context Mode: This will show a context menu when you go in to your game menu where you can choose the category.
    4) Create new folders in /PSP/GAME, /PSP/GAME150, /PSP/GAME5XX, /ISO and prefix them with 'CAT_', fill them with whichever you want in them.
    5) If you have two categories with the exact same name in two different folders, they will be merged together.

    Hiding Uncategorized:
    ---------------------

If you are using Multiple MS or Context Mode, your Uncategorized folder will only dissappear if you get rid of all your uncategorized files. If you want to force it's disappearance despite having files floating around, create a blank file called /seplugins/gc_hide_uncategorized.txt.

    Content Browser Default Image:
    ------------------------------

An empty grey boy will be used as default if there is no ICON0.PNG inside a game, but you can swap this by your own by creating a file called /seplugins/gc_default.png (144x80).

    Translation:
    ------------

    1) Copy the file in the 'translate' folder to your 'seplugins' folder.
    2) Rename it appropriatly to game_categories_xx.txt, where xx is one of these language codes:
    ja: Japanese
    fr: French
    es: Spanish
    de: German
    it: Italian
    nl: Dutch
    pt: Portuguese
    ru: Russian
    ko: Korean
    ch1: Chinese Traditional
    ch2: Chinese Simplified
    3) Open the file and translate it, save it in UTF-8 format if you have any characters not supported by ASCII.

    Notes:
    ------

    - Content Browser mode will only show ICON0.PNG, this is not a bug and is not planned to be changed anytime soon.
    - In Context Menu mode it will move around the entire list when you change selection, this is the result of standard SCE code and is hard to change.
    - You need to translate the plugin again as a large number of strings have been added due to Content Browser mode (even if you do not plan on using it).

no wonder I was confused they didn't include any of that info in the readme.

I managed to find the proper files for a lame R4 clone and it works . It says DSi on the cart but it probably never worked with DSi because it doesn't even show up with Unlaunch. I'm glad there's an alternative for the terrible default menu .

The site I got the files from feels familiar. I think I've been there before for M3 files over a decade ago and forgot it existed; until I stumbled on the GBATemp thread with the alternative menu .
