    Question Pal + Ntsc

In the UK, NZ & Australia we use the psx, ps2 logo [PAL] i know it isn't a logo it's some type of company. But in America, Japan etc they use [NTSC] i just want to know why SONY has 2 different companys for the psx, ps2..

The PAL + NTSC logo is also on other consoles like the Xbox and Gameboy. Can some 1 explain this all to me

They're different TV frequencies that different area's of the world use. European, Australian, NZ TV's have a slower refresh rate than the TV's in USA, Japan, etc. Therefore the consoles and games need to be slightly different.

Atleast that's my understanding of it...

yeah i think its pretty much the same..
it really is based on the refresh rates..
if you have a pal tv and you play a ntsc console on it..
it will have black bars on the sides..
or maybe its the other way around..
    whatever..
all i know is you don't want to do it..

The screen dimensions are different between the two, as well. Standard NTSC has a 4:3 ratio, while PAL is slightly different.

I got Tekken PAL and NTSC and PAL is soooo much slower in VGS. It took AGES to adjust to PAL now NTSC's way too fast

Not too sure if that true of games in general or just a Namco problem. Also on one of the tekken forums there was a big rampus a while back about combos being easier in the NTSC version. So gameplay might be affected too.

A lot of more recent games, especially fighting games, do allow you to select on startup whether you want to play on 50 or 60Hz... Most modern PAL TVs can handle a 60Hz refresh rate, but on older TVs running at 60Hz can give a jumpy and unplayable picture, as well as running the risk of damaging your TV...

All I can remember is that PAL stands for Phase Alternating Line or something like that. Like people have said its all about the kind of TV and all that cal. Thats why imported games from USA wont work on a normal PAL PSX for example.

And just to clarify, Sony doesn't have two different companies for the PSX and PS2. The same company will work on games for Pal and NTSC regions. It's just a matter of coding the games to work on those different frequencies...

I got Tekken PAL and NTSC and PAL is soooo much slower in VGS.
But PAL uses 625 lines to draw pictures, NTSC just 500, so, estetically, is better PAL. Games like Silent Hill 2 can conferm this More lines=Better image, Less lines=More blank spaces.

Or just an image that isn't as sharp. Yeah, the difference between playing Silent Hill 2 on my NTSC TV and then on my PC is huge, due to the higher resolution a PC offers, so I'd imagine the higher line count on a Pal tv might cause things to look a bit better then our NTSC tv's do.
