    You could try .png but stupid IE doesn't support it

    .png > .gif.
    But torpedo009 is right, IE is stupid.

    TARGA (.tga) supports transparency as well, but I don't think IE supports that either. Your best bet is GIF I'm afraid.

    Microsoft sucks. WHY oh why doesn't IE support transparent png images. Sucky MS.

    Because PNG's transparency is partial, whereas GIF's is full. Don't ask me what's the difference.

    That's what it's called; partial transparency and IE doesn't support it. I have not the slightest idea what it means though.

    You could always use a good file type and not IE...that way only the IE users would have to suffer...

    Alpha blending is awesome.

    You know how lots of artwork has these "smooth" edges? Where two colours melt together? You can't have these edges on a transparent GIF. But with PNG, oh the joy. It works great.

    Interesting. I never knew that. I never used the GIF format for that matter, but it's good to know.
