Hmm, kinda depends on the game you want to play. This setup will likely work well with most games though.

    GPI - Pete's D3D Plugin 1.73
-resolution - 1024x768 (windowed or fullscreen, your choice)
-color depth - 16bit or 32bit, your choice
    -texture quality - R8 G8 B8 A8 - best colors, more RAM needed
-texture filtering - standard + smoothed sprites
-GFX card RAM - fill in your card's video memory here
-Hi res textures - play around with these, see what you like and can run
    -Use FPS limit (yes)
-FPS limit - 60 (if not higher, if you wanna run games faster)
-Offscreen drawing - 2 - Standard (play around with this if menus don't show up properly)
-Advanced blending - 0 is standard, play around with 1 and 2 if you like
-Framebuffer textures - 1 (black) is fast, 2 (Gfx card buffer) is shinier but slower, try both
-Framebuffer access - 0 is highly compatible, may want to play with this as well

Check for any special game fixes you may need.

    Sound
Eternal SPU plugin 1.41 - very compatible, try it
-sound buffer size - 8's a good number, play with it a little if not satisfied
-check special game fixes if they apply

CDROM - may have to play with this, don't know what your CDROM is but *SaPu's* works for me
-you can leave many settings on autodetect, just be sure to select which CDROM drive you wish to use
-caching level/size - set em high

*edit - configuring your gamepad is pretty easy (config -> game pad - pad 1 or 2). your sidewinder may not be compatible, so the keyboard may have to do.
