Grabbed discpatcher utility so I can try patching some PS2 CD and DVD dumps to masterdisc.
If this all goes well the console will be able to boot all backups without needing FMCB or anything like that
PS1 backups don't seem to need patching, but I haven't tested a US title with CP so maybe I should do that too

I should also probably dig out all of my slims and see if I have more models 750xx and above.
There should still be a box of slims at work so I should check what models are there at some stage.

FMCB v1.966 multi install still works.
Need to check some retail discs (PS1&2) that aren't my region now, I'll post again later.

    Does it break ESR?

I haven't tested any ESR discs, I don't have any atm.
I'm guessing it shouldn't, but it won't matter if it does anyway if patching to masterdisc works.
The console is essential a DEV console now.

FMCB still works (multi install on MC). FreeDVDboot still works too. I even tested PS1VModeNeg on USB using FMCB to launch the relevant elf.

Masterdisc patched backups I need to test now:
    PS2 CD
    PS2 DVD5
    PS2 DVD9

Just tested a backup of Silent Hill Origins US (DVD5).
DVD-R patched to masterdisc, boots the same as a retail disc.
It won't boot if you try to launch via FMCB launch disc option.

    The Thing US (CD)
Shadow Tower Abyss JPN (Eng-T DVD5)

^ Couldn't get these to boot as retail after patching to masterdisc (CD-R and DVD-R respectively).

So, I inserted my FMCB v1.966 memory card again and left disc lid open.
Selected launch disc from FMCB menu (with lid still open), you get black screen but wait for a second.
Then close lid and both of the above discs boot.

    Champions of Norrath US (DVD9)

^Couldn't get this to work at all, tried various things including burning to DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL media
Don't think I'll try any other DVD9 games, I've wasted 2 discs on this already.

Need to see if I can get PS2 CD games to boot on CD-R the same as retail...

Sounds like DL is having fun

I should mod my PS2 at some point. Of course I've been saying this for years and still haven't

So I see Vimm's Lair is letting people upload OG Xbox ISOs as of now.

If it's a slim model 750xx or above this mod I've just done will work well, it makes the console region free and PS1 backups boot.
Most PS2 backups will boot too, I just didn't have any luck with the large size DVD9 title I tried.

Have you been able to test any CD games?

The only PS2 retail imports I have are DVD, but I did test a few PS1 US and JPN retail imports:
    Silent Hill (JPN)
    Biohazard Director's Cut (JPN)
    FF IX (US)

Maybe one last thing I might test...

Can somebody recommend a US PS1 title with serious copy protection?
Not one that I would have to play for a while to see a possible issue (is Croc Legend of the Gobbos like that? I can't remember).
