    Default ZSNES/WinZip/Rom Files Problem

My ZSNES emulator no longer recognizes my (zipped) ROM files. I select the Loading command, select the folder where I keep the ROM files, but the files themselves (and the folder that contains them) is not there. I've tried to access a srm file directly and the computer is asking me what app to use to open the file. Plus the small icon attached to the filename is a blank document. Does my laptop not know what program to use to open the files? Do I need to purchase the WinZip program for things to work? Thanks in advance.
