The problem with the DVD releases is that any footage that has effects has been cropped and in some cases partially stretched to 16:9. Anything without effects is 16:9.
The CGI was all done in 4:3 but the other stuff was shot in 16:9 on film. Technically the source quality of this show could be quite good but compromises were made for the VHS/DVD releases.

I don't think they even used the 35mm film masters for those releases anyway, just SD video tape masters.

All they would need to do is use the 35mm film master as a source for 1080p and crop all the 16:9 shots back down to 4:3.
It's a different compromise but a better one imo, I mean all the trek from then was 4:3 as were many other shows so it wouldn't look unnatural.
Or if they're really keen they could do a different angle option, sorta like the TOS BD releases but instead of switching between original effects and new CGI you could switch between 16:9 and 4:3...that way a hardcore fan could see the whole thing with every inch of footage correct aspect (16:9 for normal footage and then 4:3 for CGI) or most people could watch the whole thing in 4:3 which would be less distracting.

    Oh lol
I just read something about the NTSC DVD releases (I was curious about any regional differences)...
For the purely live-action scenes, rather than using the film negatives, "Warners had even forgotten that they had those. They used PAL versions and converted them to NTSC for the US market. They actually didn't go back and retransfer the shows."
That might be why it doesn't look good for you. Conversion from 576 to 480. Our DVDs probably look better...I've watched my set quite a bit and it looks better than what I remember being broadcast, even without upscaling. As for the CGI scenes, yeah, it's looking very old now but the cropping and stretching does it no justice.

DL thank you for all the info. Makes a lot of sense now.

Honestly I don't even mind the bad CG, that's understandable. Probably the least annoying thing compared to the other issues.

Unfortunately Babylon 5 likely doesn't have the sales appeal to see treatment like ST got.

Yeah I completely agree it's highly unlikely that it won't get the TOS or TNG treatment. TNG was costly and from what I understand only broke even after a while, which is why DS9 & Voyager are unlikely.

But it isn't impossible to make a BD release just using 35mm film as a source. No need to redo the CGI, just make a better quality release from a good master. It would end up being far better than the DVD releases. Do like I said and have 4:3 & 16:9 switchable via angle feature, press all the discs as a/b/c and just have disc art & case cover region specific

For gaming, yes. But if you want UHD BD drive as well then it all adds up to being pretty expensive.
    PS4 Pro is a waste of money as a 4k machine, doesn't have a 4k drive and games aren't native 4k.
Xbone S has has a 4k drive, but games are upscaled. Xbone X has native 4k and plenty of games are enhanced.

Yep. The initial prices on TNG were super high too. Presumably to recoup cost and the ST fandom is crazy but still a tough sell.

I agree it's possible, but doesn't seem likely. They rereleased Babylon 5 with the same dvds not all that long ago, unfortunately.
