Hefty price is like $400-500au. That's seems pretty normal here, but you have to remember that even though LD players started in the late 70's they remained high end units here for many many years, normal people just didn't buy them. That coupled with the fact that we have always had a smaller population than Canada means there aren't loads of units domestically.

    So yeah, it's pretty much:
    Cheap units need repair.
Or you jump right up to paying a lot. There's hardly ever any price scaling as such like you have when there's a decent supply (like in the US).

Never see them in thrift stores.

You can find SVHS players there and other stuff like movie projectors (traditional and modern).
I've seen a couple of betamax players.

Yeah that makes sense and from the numbers of releases it definitely didn't take off in PAL territories like it did in NTSC (esp Japan). So supply would be low and you want an NTSC player anyway.

They were really expensive here as well. That LD-S1 was $2600 retail in the late 80s. I think even at the end the cheapest players were still hundreds of dollars. It never got to where DVD and BD ended up with super cheap players.

That is the only one I've seen in a thrift. They had it at a higher price but it sat for awhile and they marked it down. I'm not in a great area for finding things at thrifts or people even having high end stuff to begin with. It's not like being near Dallas or in California where there are insane deals all the time. Not nearly as much supply here.

I did find a really nice late model JVC SVHS player awhile back though. It's still my regular VCR.

Yeah VCD/SVCD was never popular here either even though it was everywhere in Asia (just next door and easy to get cheap stuff eg Singapore).

Yeah I've started a VCD collection as they get thrown out at work. Mix of Asian and western titles but they're all Asian releases.

    Terminator 3
    Saving Private Ryan
Austin Powers The Spy Who Shagged Me
    Ice Age 4
    The Blair Witch Project
    Fight Club
    Wild Orchid 2
    Lawrence of Arabia
    The Fifth Element

And then there's a bunch of purely Asian stuff...
    CZ12 (Chinese Zodiac)
The Last Supper (nothing to do with JC lol) - sealed
    The Bullet Vanishes - sealed
    Back to 1942
    Last Hero in China
5x Neon Genesis Evangelion discs - sealed

and finally an 11 disc box set of idk wtf, there's no English anywhere and I never bothered trying to figure it out. It's Japanese anime, but this release has Chinese and Japanese characters on the box and discs.

From what I can see this VP-1000 doesn't have the upgrade board installed so probably not worth getting.
    Meh.

There is a chance I could identify it based on the cover art.

This is a good player. How much is the seller asking?

Well it's OS but the postage is quite reasonable, auction too with about a day left. I think it has pushed up to around $100us already so it could go a lot higher now.

The DVL-909 is region 1 DVD so it's either a Japanese or US unit.

OS? In any case it's a good LD player and a crappy DVD player. If you really want a player, probably worth paying around 200 US but given the situation you mentioned, maybe slightly more.

On this model I believe the US version is black and the Japanese version is champagne gold. The Japanese model would also have the outputs on the back labeled with kanji.
